DeRay on CNN: TX Sheriff Politicizing Deputy’s Death by Blaming Protest Rhetoric
Black Lives Matter activist and organizer DeRay McKesson said on CNN today that the Texas sheriff who blamed dangerous rhetoric for the shooting death of a deputy just politicized the tragedy.
Over the weekend Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was fatally shot in the back in what some believe to be a specific targeting of law enforcement. On Saturday, Sheriff Ron Hickman blamed “very dangerous national rhetoric” that fosters an anti-police environment.
He said, “We’ve heard black lives matter, all lives matter, well, cops’ lives matter too. So why don’t we drop the qualifier and just say ‘lives matter’ and take that to the bank?”
McKesson said on CNN today that “prejudicial statements” like that indicate they won’t be able to lead a “fact-driven, impartial investigation” into Goforth’s death.
He said that Hickman is “using this situation to politicize his grievance against a movement centered on ending violence and holding police accountable for their actions.”
