DeRay Mckesson, Prominent Black Lives Matter Activist, Arrested in Baton Rouge Protest (UPDATED)

 

DeRay Mckesson, a prominent activist in the Black Lives Matter movement, was arrested in Baton Rouge, La. while participating in protests.

Mckesson was livestreaming the protest on Periscope when he got arrested (go to 4:00 below). As he was handcuffed, multiple people can be heard on the livestream asking the police why he was being arrested. “He wasn’t doing anything,” says one protestor.

Alton Sterling was killed by Baton Rouge police, one of two black men to be killed by police this week, in events that galvanized nationwide protests. The Advocate reported that roughly 500 people began protesting at the state capitol at about 8:00pm local time.

UPDATE Sunday 5:15 p.m. ET: Mckesson has been released, telling the media, “I am disappointed with the Baton Rouge police who provoked protestors who were peacefully protesting.” Watch below from ABC News:
