DHS Secretary: SF Sanctuary City Laws ‘Not Acceptable,’ ‘Counterproductive to Public Safety’
“It is counterproductive to public safety to have this level of resistance to working with our immigration enforcement personnel,” he said during a speech in downtown San Francisco. The city has become a flashpoint in the debate over sanctuary city laws after 32-year-old Kate Steinle was murdered by an illegal immigrant who claimed he moved to the city for its sanctuary laws.
“It is simply, in my judgement, not acceptable to have no policy of cooperation with immigration enforcement,” Johnson continued. “We’re all interested in getting criminals off the street.”
Johnson’s criticism is the harshest from the Obama administration to date. Back in July, Johnson declined to criticize sanctuary city laws, and urged Congress not to pass laws forcing cities to abide by federal immigration laws.
