‘Do Not Give That to Him’: Stunning Texts Show Pence Aide Rejecting Ron Johnson’s Attempt to Give Trump Fake Electors
The January 6 Committee highlighted a series of text messages showing that Senator Ron Johnson’s (R-WI) office tried to offer fake electors for Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, but they were refused by a staffer for former Vice President Mike Pence.
The Committee’s Tuesday hearing partly consisted of a video presentation from their investigative counsel, Casey Lucier, and she focused on the schemes in several battleground states where Trump and his allies sought to pressure officials over the 2020 election results. The presentation also focused on those close to Trump who wanted to organize fake electors and falsely declare him the 2020 victor in their attempts to legally dispute the contest.
As Lucier looked at attempts by fake electors to deliver false certificates to Washington, she brought up text messages from Republican Party officials in Wisconsin indicating the Trump campaign “asked for someone to fly their fake elector’s documents to Washington.” Lucier then brought up a January 6 exchange between Johnson staffer Sean Riley and Pence aide Chris Hodgson, wherein Riley tried to ask how his boss could personally deliver false electors from Wisconsin and Michigan to Pence.
Hodgson, in no uncertain terms, canned the proposition:
Riley: Johnson needs to hand something to VPOTUS please advise
Hodgson: What is it?
Riley: Alternate slate of electors for MI and WI because archivist didn’t receive them
Hodgson: Do not give that to him
