Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser Rick Gates Reportedly Close To Finalizing Plea Deal With Mueller
Last October, former Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates pleaded not guilty after being indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for a number of financial crimes that were unrelated to the presidential campaign. Now, it appears he’s willing to cop a plea and cooperate with the investigation into Russian election meddling and potential collusion between Trump associates and Russian officials.
According to a new report by CNN, Gates is finalizing a plea deal with Mueller. Per sources familiar with Gates’ case, Gates has spoken to Mueller’s team and has been in negotiations to enter a plea for about a month. He’s already had what is known as a ‘Queen for a Day’ interview in which the defendant answer any questions posed to him by the prosecution.
If Gates does strike a plea deal and work with the Mueller probe, he would be the third known individual to do so. Ex-Trump campaign advisor George Papadopolous and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn have already pleaded guilty in the probe and appear to be cooperating with the special counsel.
According to one White House official, “[t]here’d be no anxiety here” if Gates entered into a plea deal and cooperated with Mueller.
