Former Bernie Sanders Campaign Manager: He May Run in 2020

Former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders‘ former campaign manager Jeff Weaver said Tuesday that the 76-year-old Vermont Democratic Socialist may run again for president in 2020.

If a potential Sanders bid for the White House is successful, it would make him the oldest president ever to assume office in his first term. Sanders will be 79 years old in January 2021, when the next U.S. president is sworn into office. Despite questions about the senator’s age, however, Sanders hasn’t given a straight answer as to whether or not he will run.

“What would you say are the things that might convince Bernie Sanders not to run for president in 2020?” MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt asked Weaver Tuesday morning.

“A meteor falling on his head?” MSNBC’s Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough quipped.

Weaver, though, responded by pointing out the “grueling” nature of a presidential run, which would seem to serve as a deterrent for a man in his late 70s. However, Weaver added that Sanders is interested in making sure the progressive vision that he articulated is carried forward.”

“If he believes he’s the best person to do that, I think he may run. If he thinks somebody else can carry the mantle, he might let somebody else run,” Weaver added. Hunt, still confused, followed up: “I’m just trying to figure out what would get him to say no because right now I’m not hearing no.”

“Well, I think he’s not said no and he’s not said yes,” Weaver replied.
