Garland Mayor: ‘No Evidence’ of ISIS Involvement in Attack
On Tuesday morning an ISIS radio announcer claimed responsibility for the shooting of an American Freedom Defense Initiative event in Garland, Texas that left one security guard injured and both gunmen dead.
However, it is as of yet unclear what claiming responsibility means. One of the gunmen had suspected ISIS sympathies, but, as Garland Mayor Douglas Athas told Fox & Friends Tuesday morning, there is no evidence yet of any actual ISIS involvement.
“I think it would be very easy for them to take claim and still have nothing to do with it,” Athas said. “Certainly, I don’t know of any evidence that linked them to actually having had a part in this.”
In general, Athas didn’t sound too pleased with Pamela Gellar, head of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, though he defended her right to hold her event.
“I didn’t quite understand the purpose of it,” Athas said. “But it’s her right to rent facilities. It’s her right to have meetings wherever she wants. We just have to be prepared for all the eventualities.”
