Gov. Cuomo Defends Travel Ban: ‘This Is Not Something to Trifle With’

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) called in to CNN’s New Day to defend the travel ban implemented in New York City and surrounding counties last night ahead of winter storm Juno.

Early predictions had warned of historic snowfall in the city, but the storm largely passed Gotham by. As a precaution New York shut down public transportation, a rare move, and put into effect a travel ban on the roads.

It was the right call, Cuomo said. “Hindsight is 20/20,” Cuomo said. “You act on the information you have at the time. The last thing I want to do are close roads and close the transportation system. It’s expensive, it slows business, et cetera. So it’s my last recourse.”

“But we’ve gotten risky the other way…and we’ve been in situations where we’ve lost lives,” Cuomo continued. “So this is nothing to trifle with, and I’d rather be a little safe than sorry.”

“The good news is since there was nobody on the roads, we could actually clear them,” he added. “Since the trains and rails were in a safe place, they’ll be coming online faster than usual. So I don’t know that we didn’t save time net when you consider everything at the end of the day.”
