‘It Is Pathetic!’ McGovern Melts Down at Republicans on House Floor for Trying to Censure Democrat Who Yelled at Trump
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) blasted House Republicans during a floor speech on Wednesday, calling them “pathetic” for trying to placate President Donald Trump’s “fragile ego.”
Trump gave a marathon address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, which was disrupted by Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who stood defiantly while pointing his cane at the president. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Green to take his seat, and Green was escorted out when he refused.
“The president was saying he had a mandate, and I was making it clear that he has no mandate to cut Medicaid,” the lawmaker said afterward.
In response, Johnson is backing a censure resolution against Green.
McGovern ripped the resolution during his speech and accused Trump of giving “one of the most bitter, angry, divisive speeches ever delivered in this room.”
“It was 90 minutes of pure propaganda. It made me sick,” he said. “And he’s obsessed with himself. Republicans jump into action after someone has the guts to stand up and call BS. Less than 24 hours later, and here they are on the floor with an emergency censure to soothe Donald Trump’s Fragile ego. I have never seen them leap into action so fast in my life! It was overnight! Meanwhile, their own voters are getting hurt by this administration and it’s radio silence.”
McGovern went on to note the massive federal layoffs the Trump administration has initiated, as well as the rising price of eggs.
“Republicans can’t lift a finger about any of those things,” he added. “But they sprint to the floor to censure Al Green because he hurt Trump’s feelings. It is pathetic, Mr. Speaker!”
