On MTP Daily today, Katy Tur asked why exactly it took so long for President Donald Trump to admit that he misspoke and correct it.
Trump said yesterday Putin told him Russia did not meddle, and “I don’t see any reason why it would be.” Today he claimed that he meant “wouldn’t” instead of “would.”
Tur showed some of the video from the stunning attempt at a walk-back, including the part where Trump said “I think that probably clarifies things pretty good by itself.”
Tur responded, “Yeah, sure. It does. Totally.”
She pointed out that Trump had plenty of opportunities to walk back his comments if he really thought he misspoke, from his Twitter feed to his Sean Hannity interview last night. But he didn’t until this afternoon:
“If the President’s advisers though he misspoke, why would it take 27 hours––27 hours––for someone to tell us? If the President actually misspoke, why is he incapable of telling us without reading directly from a written statement that was likely written for him? And why is he incapable of actually sticking to the script?”
And indeed, as he read his prepared statement today saying he believes the Russians meddled, Trump ad-libbed, “Could be other people also. There’s a lot of people out there.”
