Nickelodeon Bringing Back Legends of the Hidden Temple as TV Movie
Nickelodeon is set to revive the classic 90’s game show Legends of the Hidden Temple, but as a TV movie instead of a game show.
In the original game show, which aired from 1993 to 1995, pairs of children fought through an obstacle course shaped like a Mayan temple trying to retrieve ancient artifacts, all while being chased by “temple guards” and inevitably failing to complete the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. The upcoming 2016 TV movie will be about three siblings trying to stay alive in a fictionalized version of the temple.
Variety reports that the movie will borrow heavily from the popular elements of the game show, including “Olmec, a talking head who knows the secrets behind the temple; The Steps of Knowledge, the entrance to the temple and launching pad for the mission; and cameos from a green monkey, red jaguar, and silver snakes, among others.”
The movie is part of a move by Nickelodeon to court nostalgic millennial viewers by reviving classic ’90s shows, a move paralleled by Netflix sequels to shows like Full House and Gilmore Girls and Disney’s Girl Meets World. Nick is also producing two-part TV movie based on the animated 1996 cartoon Hey Arnold!.
