Fox News’ Outnumbered Debates Border Wall Funding: Trump’s Base ‘See He’s Caving’

Outnumbered kicked things off on Thursday by discussing President Trump‘s last ditch effort to secure funding for a border wall.

As Trump meets with GOP Congressional leaders to discuss ways to avoid government shutdown, the president is grappling with the possibility that he might not be able to secure the border security funding he wants in the new short-term spending bill. Fox News host Harris Faulkner noted on Outnumbered Nancy Pelosi might’ve been right when she told Trump he doesn’t have the congressional support he needs.

Katie Pavlich guessed that Trump wants to show he can put up a fight since he has probably noticed by now that many of his allies are criticizing him for flailing in his pursuit of the border wall. Campus Reform editor-in-chief Lawrence Jones was today’s #OneLuckyGuy, and he assessed that Trump is currently hurting with his base because he can’t decide what’s his best political move in this scenario.

“I think this is the campaign promise from the president and this is the last time he can deliver on it, so him not delivering on it would be worse for him politically…The president is getting steam rolled. The president is essentially not doing anything right now. He’s letting the Democrats have their way on this issue. The president has never been in danger before, but [Trump]’s in danger with his base now.”

As the panel debated how much leverage Republicans have in Congress now that Democrats are about to take control in the House of Representatives, it spiraled into a conversation about representatives who’ve already left Washington for the holidays. This caused Jones to wonder why the GOP waited for the last minute to do something on border security when this was a foreseeable outcome, and voters won’t be happy if Trump’s campaign promise falls through.

“I’ve never seen the president at risk with his base. This is the one potential time where they see him…They see he’s caving on this.”
