‘Please Do Better Next Time’: Dave Chappelle Delivers an Emotional Plea to Trump in Stunning 17-Minute SNL Monologue
Comedian Dave Chappelle ended a 17-minute monologue on Saturday Night Live with an impassioned plea to President-elect Donald Trump to “do better” during his second term in office.
Chappelle said the message was not just for Trump but for “all of us” as the country prepares for Trump’s Monday inauguration.
After touching on subjects from Jimmy Carter’s life and death, the LA wildfires, immigration, and Luigi Mangione, Chappelle – while smoking a cigarette – talked about Trump.
“Here’s the thing: On Monday, Donald Trump is coming back,” he said. “It’s going to be the 47th president. All the flags at half-mast because Jimmy Carter died.” Chappelle later added:
The presidency is no place for petty people. Donald Trump, I know you watch the show Man, remember whether people voted for you or not, they’re all counting on you. Whether they like you or not, they’re all counting on you.
I mean it when I say this: Good luck. Please, do better next time. Please, all of us, do better next time. Do not forget your humanity and please have empathy for displaced people, whether they’re in the Palisades or Palestine. Thank you very much!
Chappelle was met with applause by the show’s studio audience.
The comedian also poked fun at Diddy’s legal troubles, whether Haitian migrants were eating pets in his home state of Ohio, and SNL‘s Lorne Michaels asking him to host the first post-election show.
“Boy, I tell you something. I’m being very honest. I am in quite the pickle tonight. And it started in October. Lorne Michaels called me,” he said.
Chappelle said he was asked to host the show after Trump’s November win just as he did after the 2016 election.
“I was like, nah, I’m cool,” he said. He added he asked Michaels to “save the date closest to Jan. 6.”
“You know what?” he said. “I could just get rid of all these old Trump jokes. I’ll do it.”
He added, “The moment I said yes, LA burst into flames.”
