On MSNBC tonight, Steve Schmidt said Republicans are engaged in a “smear campaign” against the FBI agents at the center of a controversy regarding the texts they sent.
At today’s press briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “I think [Trump] thinks that there’s a great cause for concern that five months’ worth of texts have gone missing, particularly given the individual has been part of that process has been shown to be extremely biased against the president and was involved in what seems to be very inappropriate behavior.”
Schmidt told Chris Matthews that the attacks on the FBI are being “abetted” by both Republicans and Fox News, which he again slammed as “state-run TV.”
Former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi referenced the FISA memo being talked about by Republicans and said that there are a few things they could do about it, “but sitting on it shows yourself to be a political animal.”
Schmidt added this:
“It’s absolute snake oil. There’s absolutely zero evidence that any of these FBI agents who’s had their private texts messages compromised––there’s zero evidence that they misused their badge, their office, their credentials, to abuse the president, his family, or any of the president’s supporters. Again, this is a smear campaign directed at these two FBI agents absent any evidence. It is latter-day McCarthyism, and it is entirely what about what it seems to be about, which is trying to blow smoke around this investigation, to obstruct the American people from finding out what went on here at all costs.”
