WATCH: Gazans Cheer As Al Jazeera Journalist Removes Flak Jacket On Air While Confirming Ceasefire
Gazans cheered and lifted Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Anas al-Sharif onto their shoulders during a live broadcast as he removed his flak jacket and helmet while announcing the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
“I can finally take off this helmet, which has exhausted me all this time,” Sharif said in Arabic, surrounded by a jubilant crowd.
As he began to pull his protective gear from his body, with the help of the enthusiastic crowd, he was lifted onto one man’s shoulders as they celebrated.
The deal at least temporarily concludes 15 months of devastating conflict and includes the release of dozens of Israeli hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel. The agreement also provisions for the return of displaced Gaza residents to their homes and ensures humanitarian aid will flow into the territory.
In a statement on Wednesday, President Joe Biden welcomed the breakthrough, stating he was “thrilled” at the prospect of freeing all hostages, though he acknowledged the agreement still requires final approval from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet.
President-elect Donald Trump also praised the progress and declared the “epic” deal possible only because of his November election victory.
