WATCH: Morning Joe Airs Brutal Montage of Pence Speech on Faith Followed By Trump Talking Muslim Ban
Vice President Mike Pence delivered a speech at Liberty University’s commencement over the weekend, during which he warned the assembled students of the Christian school that they would face persecution ahead in a society that considers it fashionable to bash people of faith, for which he faced criticism and social media backlash.
When MSNBC’s Morning Joe covered the story on Monday, they used a montage to illustrate a point first made on Twitter by The Atlantic’s David Frum. Frum tweeted about the speech, and then retweeted his tweet with the comment: “Do you suppose Pence gets his own joke?”
Host Joe Scarborough showed the tweet on screen, and then introduced the montage saying “here’s what Frum likely meant by that tweet.”
The montage, above, interspersed clips of Pence’s speech with clips of Trump talking about Islam and the Muslim ban, and then Trump saying the word bullshit at a rally. (Some of the individual Trump clips can be found here.)
After the montage, Scarborough made a point of Pence having stood next to Jerry Falwell Jr. in making his speech. “Really Mike,” he said with a wry laugh. “Come on, really Mike? Really? Oh my God. I know you have to be embarrassed, what you’re doing. Cause you have Jerry Falwell Jr. and Donald Trump, and, you’re trying to sound like Billy Graham there? Doesn’t work.”
“Context, so important,” said Scarborough. Then he introduced MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton.
