‘Well, That Was a Lot’: Weary Jake Tapper Gives Deadpan Reaction to Interview with Donald Trump Jr. After Debate
CNN host Kaitlan Collins interviewed Donald Trump Jr. after Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate, prompting Jake Tapper to give a supremely deadpan reaction.
For nearly two hours, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio fielded questions from CBS News moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan. Pundits largely panned Walz’s performance and deemed Vance the more skilled debater. Viewers, however, were evenly split as to which candidate turned in the best performance.
Afterward, in the spin room, Collins spoke with the younger Trump and sparred with him after she noted the civility of the debate and asked, “Should we see more of that on the debate stage when your dad’s up there?”
“You know what? I’d love to see that across the board,” he replied before pivoting to attacking the media over “Trump derangement syndrome” and “Russian disinformation.”
“You know, the media did that,” he said, claiming the press put former President Donald Trump in danger. “They created so much of that environment. The media has radicalized the people that are trying to kill my father. I’ve had to deal with that twice now, in the last two months. I’ve had to have that conversation with my five young children, twice in the last two months about someone trying to shoot their grandfather.”
Collins noted, “There’s been no evidence” that the plots against the ex-president were driven by the media, the younger Trump accused the media of calling his father “Hitler.”
The CNN host then took the obvious next step, stating, “But as you know, JD Vance once likened your dad to Hitler as well– he questioned if he was America’s Hitler.”
Collins eventually thanked Trump for his time and threw it back to Tapper.
“Jake, back to you.”
“Well, that was a lot,” Tapper declared.
