Last week, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to issue a threat to recently fired FBI Director James Comey, telling him he better hope there are no “tapes” of their conversations if Comey was thinking about leaking to the press. Obviously, the tweet caused waves, with Democrats demanding the White House provide any recordings if they exist. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer refused to deny that Trump is bugging people at the Oval Office.
During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press this morning, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) offered up some advice to the president — please stop tweeting about things like this.
Explaining that it seems necessary to have Comey now testify to the Senate about all of this, Graham said “if there are tapes of” Comey’s conversations with Trump — especially related to the Russia investigation — then “they need to be turned over.”
“You can’t be cute about tapes,” he added.
Noting that he doesn’t believe Trump is personally under any investigation — Trump claims Comey has told him that on three different occasions — the South Carolina lawmaker stated that he’d “advise the president not to tweet about the investigation going forward.”
“He needs to back off here,” Graham exclaimed.
He would go on to discuss his feelings on who should be hired as the new FBI director and expressed his desire for the president to release his tax returns.
