Israeli government’s spokesperson Eylon Levy was suspended late Tuesday after an online exchange with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron over humanitarian aid in Gaza.

The Foreign Office reportedly issued a complaint against Levy, who has appeared on UK-based news channels regularly as Israeli government representative since October, after he publicly countered Cameron’s call for increased Israeli aid into Gaza.

Cameron’s tweet, posted to X on March 8, saying that the UK and US were opening a “maritime border” to deliver aid and urged Israel “to allow more trucks into Gaza as the fastest way to get aid to those who need it.”

In a further post the Foreign Minister expressed the British government’s “deep concern” about a potential attack on the city of Rafah in Gaza, demanding instead “an immediate humanitarian pause” in fighting.

According to the Mail Online the spokesman replied in a now deleted post: “I hope you are also aware there are NO limits on the entry of food, water, medicine, or shelter equipment into Gaza, and in fact the crossings have EXCESS capacity. Test us. Send another 100 trucks a day to [border checkpoint] Kerem Shalom and we’ll get them in.”

The Foreign Office reportedly then issued a request to the Israeli government asking if the “Cameron-critical” response reflected its stance. Levy was suspended soon after, confirmed by the Jerusalem Post on tuesday.

Back home in Israel, Levy’s participation in protests against judicial reforms prior to the Israel-Hamas War had already caused problems, with Sara Netanyahu, the Prime Minister’s wife, reportedly seeking his ouster.
