Actor-turned-activist Laurence Fox apologised for wearing Nike shoes to a crowd of protestors gathered to express anger at the company’s redesign of the St George’s cross on England’s new national football kit.

Nike drew criticism from many quarters, including from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, for its “playful update” to the red and white cross located on the shirt’s collar that it replaced with a modification that introduces purple and blue stripes, which is reportedly inspired by the training kit of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team. Some fans launched a petition to have the shirt redesigned.

Fox attended a small protest in London over the weekend demanding that the company “leave our flag alone.” However, the former GB News host seemingly hadn’t realised the brand of his shoes before leaving the house.

Sporting bright blue Nike trainers, Fox apologised and said he had bought them over a decade earlier.

“When I get home I’ll burn them,” he said, to cheers and laughter from the crowd.

Despite this, online mockery followed as images circulated of Fox and his shoes at the demonstration caused his name to trend on X.

On Sunday Fox threw back, blasting a “slow news day” that people should be fixated. It is unclear, however, whether Fox has burned his shoes as promised.
