BBC journalist Sonja McLaughlan poured fuel on conspiracy theories about the whereabouts of Kate Middleton after sharing her belief that the woman captured on video at Windsor Farm Shop on Saturday is “clearly not” the Princess of Wales.

McLaughlan, who works for the broadcaster as a sports reporter, wrote in a now deleted tweet that the footage was “obviously not Kate.”

She wrote: “Disturbing that newspapers like The Times are reporting this as fact. Headline ‘Kate seen in public for the first time’ when it’s clearly not her. As someone has said. Could be a couple of lookalikes making mischief.”

In another post, under the video, she added: “It’s so obviously not Kate. Some newspaper are reporting it as fact. But it’s not her. No conspiracy theorist but all very odd.”

The clip, first published by The Sun, appeared to capture a smiling woman, allegedly the princess, strolling beside Prince William minutes from their Windsor Castle residence, Adelaide Cottage. The footage was reportedly the first of the future Queen since her abdominal surgery in January.

Speculation over the whereabouts of Middleton was sparked after a doctored Mother’s Day photo, issued by Kensington Palace, triggered a “kill notice” by major global news agencies. Soon after the future Queen personally apologised in a rare statement on X for the confusion and claimed responsibility for the edits.

The heightened curiosity around Middleton also made headlines after a reported data breach at the London Clinic, where her surgery was supposedly conducted. Hospital staff there are under investigation after an unauthorised attempt to “access” the Princess of Wales’ medical records.
