WATCH: BBC News Apologises For Claiming Israeli Military Was Targeting ‘Medical Teams’

BBC News issued an apology Wednesday for reporting related to the Israeli army’s operation at Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital claiming that “medical teams and Arab speakers were being targeted.”

In an on-air statement, BBC News said it had “misquoted a Reuters report.” The correct information, as per the BBC’s clarification, was that “IDF forces included medical teams and Arabic speakers.”

The BBC News said in its statement: “We apologise for this error that fell below our editorial standards.”

The misreporting led to significant backlash, including from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, who called for a public apology from the broadcaster. They expressed their shock in a tweet, stating they were “absolutely appalled” by the mistake.

The Board criticised the BBC for a “staggering lack of care when reporting on a highly volatile situation,” highlighting the potential global impact, including a surge in antisemitic attacks in Britain since October 7th. They urged the BBC to publicly apologise for what they termed “egregious reporting,” emphasising the need for the broadcaster to uphold its commitment to professionalism and impartiality.

Despite the apology, a further tweet from We Stand With Israel, however, accused the BBC for repeatedly smearing Israel and considered the apology insufficient given the perceived damage caused by the report.
