Corey Lewandowski Calls AG’s Trump Foundation Suit ‘Politics at Its Very Worst’
Following the announcement of Attorney General Barbara Underwood‘s suit against President Donald Trump‘s foundation and its executives, his former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, condemned the move, calling it “politics at its very worst.”
“What we have seen is Eric Schneiderman thought he was going to make his political career going after Donald Trump and his family and the foundation,” Lewandowski said during a Thursday Fox News interview, appearing to draw from the remarks of a foundation spokesperson. “At the same time he was asking for donations when he was running for office, so that’s the hypocrisy of New York politics.”
Lewandowski blasted Underwood for the suit, which he argued was biased claiming she called “battling the White House” the most critical part of her job.
“‘Battling the White House is the most important work I have ever done.’ That’s what the attorney general of New York has said,” Lewandowski alleged. “So if you don’t think that her attacks on the Trump Foundation are a political vendetta, then nothing is. She is abusing her power as attorney general to go after a foundation that has donated tens of millions of dollars to charitable causes, and specifically those to help veterans.”
There appears to be no evidence of an actual statement made by Underwood upon her confirmation as attorney general was once of appreciation for the post.
“I believe this job, at this moment in history, is the most important job I have ever had,” she said at the May 22 event.
Reporter Jon Campbell, who is part of the USA Today Network, acknowledged the discrepancy between the May 22 statement and the one Lewandowski invoked, noting it has also been mentioned by Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Underwood discussed the reasons behind the suit Thursday, alleging that the Trump Foundation has misused nearly $3 million in funds for a series of non-charitable endeavors and personal expenses.
As a consequence, the attorney general is seeking the return of the funds, the dissolution of the foundation and additional penalties.
It is important to clarify that while being asked about the case, Lewandowski is also involved in it, and has an understandable interest in his own defense.
“I’ve never spoken to anyone from the New York attorney general’s office. They’ve never contacted me. I’ve always made myself available. So, again, this is politically motivated,” Lewandowski said, pointing out that the Clinton Foundation accepted foreign donations.
“The Trump Foundation, by contrast, raised $18.8 million over 30 years and gave away 19.2 million, meaning they gave away actually more money than they had ever raised,” he added.
Underwood alleges that the donations were handed out selectively by the Trump Foundation in the time leading up to the Iowa caucuses and that there are emails from Lewandowski detailing which organizations were to receive the funds.
While Underwood has maintained the case is her own, not one led by politics or her predecessor, Lewandowski contended Trump has been “politically targeted” and that the attorney general is “using her office to go after the Trump Foundation.”
