Baltimore Jury Deadlocked in Freddie Gray Officer Case

freddie-gray-william-porter-trial-300x173Reuters reports that the jury that has been deliberating since this morning in the case of the police officer charged in connection to the death of Freddie Gray is deadlocked.

The judge on the case reportedly ordered jurors to continue deliberating. If the jury is eventually found to be hopelessly deadlocked, a mistrial would be declared and Baltimore PD Officer William Porter would be set free. Prosecutors would then need to decide whether or not to bring up charges again.

Porter was charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment in the death of Grey, who died after being injured in police custody in April. If convicted, he faces a maximum 25 years in prison.

Earlier in the day, Baltimore cancelled the leave of all police officers in anticipation of a verdict. In the week following Gray’s death, Baltimore was the scene of massive protests and riots.
