Bill Clinton on Russia: It Takes a ‘Single-Digit IQ’ to Think They’re Not the Hackers

bill-clintonImagine for a moment that you are the editor of a small-town newspaper, going about your business in a local book store, when you bump into Bill Clinton, who then proceeds to give you his candid thoughts on the 2016 election. What sounds like a setup for a celebrity cameo in Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls” revival actually happened to the (unnamed) editor of the Bedford-Pound Ridge Record Review, who wrote up the highlights in the paper’s print edition. Politico first spotted the piece, which contain some of the former president’s first public comments on his wife, Hillary Clinton, losing the election to Donald Trump.

As for the big news story of the moment, he made it perfectly clear that he believes Russia backed the hacks of the Democratic National Committee and John Podesta, Hillary’s campaign chairman. “You would need to have a single-digit IQ not to recognize what was going on,” he said.

As for Trump, Clinton said “he doesn’t know much” when questioned about the president elect’s intelligence. “One thing he does know is how to get angry, white men to vote for him.” Trump’s appeal to certain demographics wasn’t the only thing he cited, though: “James Comey cost her the election,” he added, noting that “We were seven points up at the time” of the FBI director re-stoking the fires of the private email server controversy.

Clinton also appeared frustrated by Trump’s various tall tales, saying we are now in “post-truth era where facts don’t matter” and poking holes in his claims about his margin of victory. “Landslide? I got something like 370 electoral votes,” Clinton said. “That was a landslide.” For the record, 370 was the exact number of electoral votes that Clinton got in 1992.

The Record Review editor pointed out that Clinton seemed a bit “incredulous” as to Trump’s turnaround on his wife in the aftermath of the election, saying that the president elect was “[acting] like it was 15 years ago” when they ran in the same circles.
