George W. Bush’s First Big Motivational Speech A Success
Last week, we reported that former president George W. Bush was putting his newly found free time to use by hitting the motivational speaking circuit with Get Motivated!, a motivational event series that likes to bring in former and current politicians alongside business leaders. His first speech was last night. How’d he do, and what did he talk about?
When Slate asked professional motivational speakers to offer words of advice to the former president, a few themes emerged: Bush should be human and approachable, reflect on his past mistakes, and work around his famous inarticulateness.
According to the Washington Post, he succeeded on all three fronts:
Many people interviewed afterward said they liked Bush, perhaps even because he wasn’t the best speaker of the day. He could have said a thesaurus was a big scaly creature that roamed the planet millions of years ago and they would have applauded.
His most memorable story, one after another said, was about Barney, his Scottie:
Mindful of his new neighbors, who have had to endure as many as 650 people a day gawking at his new house in a cul-de-sac, Bush said he took Barney for a neighborhood stroll with “plastic bag on his hand” to scoop poop. That was a moment, he said, when he realized “Man, my life has changed!”
“He is just a normal guy! He wasn’t the best speaker. But I was happy to see him!” said Lubbock salesman Patrick Kruger, 50.

I think George Bush did the best he could with the lack of help he had.

Professional speakers said Bush needs to “…be human and approachable, reflect on his past mistakes, and work around his famous inarticulateness.” Those paying attention the 8 years Bush was in office know this describes his character to a tee already — he didn’t need to ‘become’ these things. That was one of the things that made him likeable to those who have the ability to judge good human character. He’s quite different from the defensive, thin-skinned, insecure man holding the office now who is always, always attacking and spewing negativity which gets old really fast and is not at all motivational. It’s no surprise to me that his first reviews are favorable and I have no doubt Bush will have great success as a motivational speaker.
The Media’s Weird Love Affair With Glenn Beck

Is anyone in the media not talking about Glenn Beck? It's clear we here at Mediaite certainly spend a lot of time doing so, but it would appear the rest of the world is catching up. Are they ever. Just take my morning media consumption as an example.
Conservative Bloggers Loved The CBO Before They Hated It
The Congressional Budget Office released its preliminary estimate of the Senate health care bill yesterday. Upon the report’s release, conservative bloggers and pundits began trying to discredit the CBO, saying that the office allows Democrats to cook the numbers and its estimates are often not a good indicator of reality. And if the CBO is so unreliable, then these bloggers wouldn’t cite it uncritically when it favors their positions, right?
