Class Act: Casey Anthony Defense Attorney Gives Reporters The Finger

class act

Yesterday’s stunning verdict in the Casey Anthony trial has revealed a number of rifts in public opinion. While the overriding public opinion seems to be of stunned outrage, there are a few iconoclasts who feel that justice was served by the jury’s decision of not guilty on the charges of murder. But another, more secondary topic that has been just as hotly debated in the wake of the verdict has been the media’s role in this case. And Casey Anthony Defense Attorney Cheney Mason left little doubt on his true feelings evidenced by his gesture here.

WESH.com explains:

Casey Anthony defense attorney Cheney Mason was pictured giving reporters and onlookers his “finger of affection,” as Judge Belvin Perry dubbed the gesture during the high-profile trial.

Last week, Perry sentenced a courtroom spectator to six days in jail for holding his middle finger up to a prosecutor.

On Tuesday afternoon, after a not guilty verdict was read in Casey Anthony’s murder trial, Mason was seen using his middle finger at a downtown Orlando restaurant.

Shortly after the verdict had been reached yesterday, Mason spoke to the media covering this gruesome and sad story and chose to vilify the very media to which he was speaking. Apparently he wanted to be crystal clear on how he felt about the press, and felt that he needed this particular gesture to get his feelings across. Stay classy Cheney Mason!

Wait, did they chase him into a restaurant? I’m not seeing a foul here, at least on Mason’s part. If you’re going to act like paparazzi, that’s the level of respect you ought to expect to receive.

  • Liberal Tormentor – tormenting liberals with logic and facts since 1972

How do you look yourself in the mirror, scumbag?

  • TfT

Yeah, that was kind of inappropriate. I understand it given the way the media has treated the defense team, but this just adds fuel to the fire. A big fat chesire grin would have been more effective.

I think there are valid points all around in the verdict; I am one that happens to agree with Allen Dersowitz (sp) that the state over charged her and this is the result of that.

  • Cecelia

Frankly, I didn’t hold with the verdict either, but I think everyone needs to calm down here.

I watched some media coverage this morning that was so irresponsible I’m afraid it might incite violence against the jurors or “Tot Mom”.

Speaking of “Tot Mom”, why in the world has Nancy Grace worked so hard to coin this term, and does she have the slightest modicum of respect for our judicial process?

  • Just my Opinion

I think this trial and the OJ trial, among many many others I won’t list, explains perfectly
why the profession is called “CRIMINAL Defense Lawyers”

  • dhg

Frankly given the yet again massive explotation of this case by the media which is still going on and the tendency of the media to assign a verdict by implication through it’s coverage I don’t blame the man for being angry, frustrated and for going a bit too far in expressing that outrage.

Was the finger the best way to express himself?Probably not.But he had every right to feel as he did and plenty of justification.I’d love to give a wide variety of members of the media the finger every damn day.they all deserve it and are a major player in the distortion of truth and information we all are bombarded with every day.

Oh! Nancy Grace always comes up with what she thinks are cutsy little nicknames.
    Much like RRK.
    Boring to say the least!
When Nancy Grace appears on the screen, I reach for the remote. An awful woman!!
No matter which side she is on

  • dhg

As usual I see this thread is turning into a trial in and of itself even though no commentor was in the courtroom and was presented with the evidence.

The verdict was a failure of the state to eliminate reasonable doubt,to persue the best possible remedy and to answer fundemental questions concerning the circumstances.end of story, get over it.

  • Judge Mental

I can understand Mason’s frustration, but that was unprofessional. Not much of a “southern gentleman” after all, I guess.

  • Azarkhan

It’s a misunderstanding. Mr. Mason was giving the finger not to the media, but to Caylee Anthony.

It needs to be remarked upon too, that we have a bit of a cultural emblem here as to what’s happened to us.

We have a not just grown…but SENIOR…. man, highly educated, etc… sitting in a restaurant making a vulgar gesture at any critic.

Just like we have grown and educated men here acting like second graders under the justification of by-any-means-necessary, when it comes to politics.

It’s THIS sort of implosion of decorum, logic, and perspective, that is more emblematic of what we should fear in this country, than is this one jury verdict.

  • valkyrie101

I wonder if Colby is standing up for Dan who was certainly among those talking head attorneys that Mason was fingering.

It takes a lowlife scumbag attorney to defend a worthless piece of crap like casey and so it is nice to see he proved it to be true. There is a special place reserved for her and these scumbags!

As silly as that thought is, what would it matter.

It’s clearly inappropriate of Mason even if he were doing it at a waiter who spilled soy sauce on his bespoke trousers.

I’m shocked you would take that position. You seem more salty than that. For some people, including disrespectful and rude media people who pop in on lunch, there is only one symbol that they really understand.

  • NyQuill

Well la-di-da, your majesty. Forgive this gentleman for not respecting the infallibility of the media, who never get anything wrong, who never mangle the truth, who never beat horses until long after they are dead, who never offer speculation and hyperbole as a substitution for facts, and who never burrow into the personal lives of people whether they deserve it or not.

Sometimes the media deserves a hell of a lot more than the finger.

All this shows is the lack of class of Casey Anthony and her whole team, all during the trial…All their champagne partieing, also shows the lack of sympathy & respect for the little dead girl Caylee Marie Anthony..I’m sure Baez’s calendar will fill up with scum of the earth, hoping to get a verdict like Casey Anthony did!!!!

Unfortunately, Cecelia, we don’t have a clue what obscenities were hurled at this guy on his way into the restaurant, or as he sat there. It’s not that i agree with what he did, but objectivity would say he’s getting lambasted because the state messed up their prosecution, he actually only did his job (too well for most of us)

I am sure this enduring digital photo will be a proud memory professionally for him and for his family for the rest of his days. Class act.

  • mlb

He can flip the media off all he wants but he should be thanking them as well- The media “created” this high profile case – without them Casey would have had an attorney appointed to her by the court and none of us would have cared much less known more than anyone us really needed to about this families disfunctional dynamics.

As with all high profile, media grabbing, publicity events as this trial became, he will no doubt live on the residuals of that publicity with a book, interviews, publicity appearances at law school and ethics debates.
My suggestion is that he not to vilify the media, next year his publicist will be calling their booking departments to get on the talking head circuit to peddle his story- maybe with Casey in tow.

  • CAconservative

That finger was a demonstration of complete frustration with the press. A frustration felt across this nation. The lack of objective, and balanced news reporting has become common place. I don’t blame the jury at all, for not talking to a press, that is going to take what they say and spin it.

  • jelliebean

They were celebrating a win. I don’t think it was the right thing to do but I certainly understand their relief given the years of work on the case coupled with having Nancy Grace trash them every night during the trial. I’d flip her off if I had the chance. Since he used a finger I will too… thumbs up.

    Chuckle, chuckle,

He only did what all of us has wanted to do some time or another! LOL

One time, after a Divorce hearing, I brought some documents over to my wife’s attorney, and, with a smile, whispered to him, “Just so you know, I hate your guts.”

Wouldn’t you know it, those microphones are very sensitive, and the Judge heard it. Ouch!

You know I’m sure you’re right. How could anyone “demonize” Casey? Let’s face it, forgetting to notice your child was missing for 31 days could happen to any mother. How dare anyone even suspect that Casey wasn’t a good mother. Actually Casey was only searching for chloroform online to find something to remove the stench from her trunk. Anyone with half a brain realizes Casey had nothing to do with the disappearence of her daughter.

You had better believe their families are very proud of them for making the criminal justice system responsible to present a complete case, regardless of her pathological lying, as to whether or not their was sufficient evidence to convict. There obviously wasn’t. People, get on with your lives.

Your sentence is ambiguous, both Tot Mom and Nancy Grace don’t have a modicum of respect for the judicial system, the courts, or the Constitution. Thank God jurors were able to sort out what was given to them with a great deal of care. Maybe just as in the O,.J. Trial, if the only thing you got to see was from the jury box without any more information, you would have come to the same conclusion.

Regardless of our feelings, Casey Anthony is not guilt of murder or any related offense. In fact, there was no proof positive of a murder.

    “Easy Money”

    It’s difficult. It’s very tough.
I said to the man who’d been sleeping rough
To sit within a fragrant breeze
    All among the nodding trees
That hang heavy with the stuff

He threw his arms around my neck
He brushed the tear from my cheek
And held my soft white hand
    He was an understanding man
He did not even barely hardly speak

    Easy money
Rain it down on the wife and the kids
Rain it down on the house where we live
Rain until you got nothing left to give
And rain that ever-loving stuff down on me

All the things for which my heart yearns
    Gives joy in diminishing returns
He kissed me on the mouth
    His hands they headed south
    And my cheek it burned

Money, man, it is a bitch
The poor, they spoil it for the rich
With my face pressed in the clover
I wondered when this would be over
And at home we are all so guilty-sad

    Easy money
Pour it down the open drain
Pour it all through my veins
Pour it down, yeah, let it rain
And pour that ever-loving stuff down on me

Now, I’m sitting pretty down on the bank
Life shuffles past at a low interest rate
    In the money-coloured meadows
    And all the interesting shadows
    They leap up, then dissipate

    Easy money
    Easy money
    Easy money
Rain it down on the wife and the kids
Rain it down on the house where we live
Rain it down until you got nothing left to give
And rain that ever-loving stuff down on me

Not another word on Casey Anthony — UNLESS its the story of how George buys a gun puts it in Caseys mouth, then Cindys, then himself . I dont want to see any interviews, see the movie, read the book if told by her it will never be true.. I’m open to hear from either legal team – Jose’s story if he was told the truth by his client would be worth being disbarred– I never want to see Casey again unless dead or back in trouble (definitely not porn she make me sick).. Jury you all need to remain silent – so pepole dont find out just how dumb you all really are.

You would expect this from the losing side maybe but this guys a moron. Not only is he absolutely very unprofessional here but his reasoning sucks. The defense seems to bitching about ‘unfair” treatment of their client.

    Are they freaking serious?

Even if not guilty of murder, she was undisputedly the biggest scumbag disgrace of a mother and that cannot be denied. All the denouncing of her over the course of the trial was the TRUTH about how she acted and how she behaved. If some gave their opinion that she was guilty, well they’re allowed, it was just their opinion and an opinion that a sequestered jury wouldn’t hear anyway. The other 90% was just the TRUTH about what a piece of sh!t she was.

So stop bitching defense! Your a bit nauseating to hear.

whatever or whoever you may want to blame the one and only big tragedy will always remain how little Caylee’s murderer will now be a free woman to go back to her vile and disgusting hard-partying lifestyle all thanks to inept prosecutors who dropped the ball, one terrible cop, 12 useless, uncaring and disgraceful jurors, and a group of shameless lawyers who somehow manage to sleep at night even after selling their souls to the devil.
Little Caylee, RIP you didn’t deserve such a horrific death at the hands of the one person who GOD gave you for protection , love and care . Let those of us who cared, prayed, cried and were so horrified by your cruel death find a bit of solace and comfort in the knowledge that Angels rock you to sleep in their arms every night and that you are now where your mother will never ever be able to hurt you again. GOD BLESS YOU CAYLEE
