Democratic Senator From Kentucky Caught Calling Constituents “Rednecks” On Tape
According to the Bowling Green Daily, a forum between two Senatorial candidates from the state of Kentucky, last night, “ended with both candidates for state Senate calling each other liberal.” However, to prove his point, the Republican candidate, Mike Wilson, has made a website of audio clips of the incumbent, Democrat Mike Reynolds, appearing to call his constituents “rednecks.”
The short tape was recorded while Reynolds was speaking to a Western Kentucky University class about health care. Here’s what he can be heard saying:
“I’m undecided about, if you are in this country but you’re not a citizen, what does that bring you? I’m kind of a mixed band on that. Excuse my French, but my redneck constituents out here in far out Kentucky, don’t like that.”
It would appear that Reynolds is using the term in a kind of Jeff Foxworthy-proud to be a good ol’ boy-type way, something he tried to bring home by posing with a group called “Rednecks for Reynolds” during the forum. However, his opponent is trying to position it as an affront to the voters of Kentucky and something you just do not say. What with the context-free nature of the clip and my position as nothing but a pale-necked, lily livered cityslicker, I’m not going to try to decide whose right.
What do you all think? Is this just a down home phrase being twisted or is this a politician insulting the very people he’s been elected to run?
Below is a clip from WHAS 11 as they discuss and play a shortened version of the audio. You can listen to the full clip on Wilson’s site here.
