‘I Don’t Think He’s Funny. I Think He’s Mean’: Stephen Colbert and John Oliver Sound Off on Trump
During a two-hour conversation and Q&A in New Jersey Saturday night, comedians Stephen Colbert and John Oliver reflected on Donald Trump winning the presidency and what that means to the media and political humor.
According to NJ.com, Colbert answered one audience member’s question of whether or not Trump is funny by being blunt and to the point.
“I don’t think he’s funny,” Colbert noted. “I think he’s mean.”
Colbert also discussed his live Election Night Showtime special, in which he went from believing at the start of the evening that Hillary Clinton would easily win to him and the audience realizing that Trump could pull it off. Oliver commented on what it was like tuning in after 11 PM ET.
“I turned on Showtime like 11:02 and I saw your face and seven seconds later I’m like, ‘Nah …’,” Oliver told the CBS late-night host.
Colbert and Oliver also derided fake news sites, which they feel helped Trump defeat Clinton, while distancing themselves from them.
“We got on TV and said, ‘This is all going to be fake.’ And the fact that they call this fake news upsets me because this is lying,” Colbert pointed out.
When asked by an attendee how bad things will be under President Trump, Colbert admitted he didn’t know but that people should take what he said on the campaign trail seriously.
“All I know is that this whole thing about give him a chance,” The Late Show host responded. “I’m all for giving a chance but don’t give him an inch because I believe everything he said and I remember everything he said and it’s horrifying.”
Meanwhile, Oliver stated that it would be tough to go about living life as normal because “not everyone is going to be OK.”
The event, titled ‘Wow, That Was Weird: A Post-Election Evening With Stephen Colbert and John Oliver,’ was held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and was a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival.
