Jon Stewart Calls Out Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson And…Rachel Maddow?

video

The tragedy and devastation unfolding in Haiti has brought everyone together. The constant bickering and finger-pointing of opinion journalism seems both irrelevant and inappropriate in the face the unfolding disaster. Except, as Jon Stewart points out, not everyone has risen above the partisan fray. Last night, Stewart called out some of his favorite targets: Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, and of course, Rachel Maddow. Whaaaaa?

Jon Stewart makes his point by first airing a clip of Limbaugh’s comments that preemptively criticized the Obama administration for using the tragedy to appeal to “both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country.” He then follows with Pat Robertson’s claim that the tragedy in Haiti is likely a result of a “pact to the Devil” made by Haitian people long ago.

As for Ms. Maddow? Stewart airs a clip showing her going out of her way to point out how smart Obama was to appoint someone as smart, respected and experienced as Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, who is helping to lead and coordinate humanitarian efforts to Haiti. In of itself, this isn’t so bad, but when Maddow can’t resist making a disparaging and unnecessary comparison to implied incompetence of the Bush Adminstration? As Jon Stewart exclaims at the end of the bit- wrong time!

I loved Jon’s show last night but, I thought he was off base about Rachel. She was simply stating a fact, which is something that could not be said for Limbaugh and Robertson.

This all goes back to the claim that Rachel Maddow is comparable to people like Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson. Do I think that Rachel’s pandering was appropriate, of course not, but are her comments comparable to the urban myth spreading insanity of Pat Robertson? No. Are her comments comparable to Rush Limbaugh’s not-so-subtle attempts to tell his listeners to not donate because they already give enough? Even less so.

In the end though, Jon was right. Now was not the right time for a partisan attack.

Stewart had it right. This is not the time or place for the normal partisan flaming spitball fight. Maddow crossed the line willingly and knowing what she was saying.

While her comments were not as vile as Limbaugh or Robertson, they were inappropriate and untimely.

What is saddest about this is that previously, tragedies like this have united everyone to help. Not anymore. The poisoned atmosphere – poison introduced by both sides – has now overtaken even the most noble of causes.

By the way, add Al Roker to the list of pathetic opportunists. During an MSNBC report from Haiti, Roker repeatedly promoted his show on The Weather Channel in almost every sentence. Again, not the severity of Limbaugh, but still wrong and out of place.

For shame on the whole stinking lot of them.

Rachel Maddow only made a partisan attack if you assume she wouldn’t have pointed out a change for the better between Democratic administrations or even one within the same administration.

Maybe people would like to believe “we are the world, we are the children” during a humanitarian crisis. But, that’s either naive or willfully ignorant and dangerous thinking either way. People need to know that elections are not a popularity contest or a game as that “Game Change” book flying off the shelves implies. Who we elect has real consequences–life and death consequences.

Tragedies like this have not always united everyone. And even when one united an overwhelming majority, that has not always translated into our government acting as we would like it to. That is a truth that I think some people just don’t want to hear. Trouble is, it’s also a truth that some people have experienced for themselves.

*How I define “tragedy” and “humanitarian crisis” is apparently broader because I include epidemics, genocides and extreme poverty.

Danny Glover blames Haitian Earthquake on Failed Copenhagen Summit

Says Glover: “When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I’m sayin’?”

Yes, people who blame outside causes and try to politicize natural disasters with partisan viewpoints should be pointed out as being impediments to the problem. Well, most people. . .

Never thought I’d see the day where Mediaite didn’t aggressively defend Rachel Maddow.

In all the Pat Robertson stories Ive read, I dont see enough mentioning that he said his crazy comments during a telecast to raise donations for the survivors in Haiti. Plus the CBN raises millions a year for charities. Judge his scripture analysis as insane (I do), but he does a lot a good for a lot of needy people. Thats my problem with guys like Olbermann who will judge what he says but can never look at the big picture.

It doesnt mean his comments werent off the wall, but who is more valuable; the blogger chastising Robertson as a lunatic but donating no money, or the guy who says ludicrious things but raises a million bucks to help the survivors? Im guessing they wont be turning down his donation.

  • DEO

    Johnny M…c’mon.

It’s like saying Johnny M’s mom is a child molester, but she didn’t mean it and she hit hard times and needs money, please donate money and take pity on this child molester. She could use the help.

Is your mom a child molester? NO! WHY would somebody say she was? FOR ANY REASON…it’s not true.

Do you think Haiti is suffering because of devil worship? I don’t need to hear this guy’s jive ass BS, agenda crap, and he shouldn;t take an opportunity like THIS to exploit what he would call heathens (it is a Christian country BY THE WAY)…give money, garner support and leave your spin out of it. He was wrong. By the same token Maddow was wrong too, if you get into the absolute BLACK and WHITE of it.
If a person is buried alive you don’t point out ANYTHING, you just dig them out.

Whether or not you think that Rachel was politicizing this, her comments don’t rise to the level of those of Limbaugh and Robertson’s. Maybe a better comparison for Stewart would have been fox’s coverage of the GOP’s response to the underpants bomber. That said, it will be interesting to see what Rachel’s response will be, if any. Will she reconsider and apologize to her viewers, or state her case for her comparison? We’ll see!

When can we expect Jon to call out David Brooks for his racist commentary against Haiti?? Should I hold my breath??
