Iowa Rep. Steve King went on the record Tuesday in response to the backlash over his questionable tweet on Sunday.

During the Breitbart News Daily radio show, King said, “If I were gonna change anything — first of all, there’s only 140 characters. So I really don’t know why people hyperventilate over a tweet.”

The Iowa rep would go on to question whether those who had such strong reactions to his tweet were not “willfully ignorant.”

But if I had room to add on, I would say, ‘You can’t rebuild your civilization with somebody else’s babies unless you adopt them and bring them into your homes and raise them as your own. And that’s the core of that tweet. They’re importing a different culture, a different civilization, and that culture and civilization, the imported one, rejects the host’s culture, and so they are supplanting Western civilization with Middle Eastern civilization. And I say — and Geert Wilders says — Western civilization is a superior civilization. It is the first world.

This comes, of course, after much hyperventilation over his Sunday tweetstorm in which he claims that we can’t “restore our civilization with some else’s babies.” Since Sunday there has been a great deal of commentary and criticism over King’s statements. A neo-Nazi website even claimed the representative as “[their] guy.”

King appeared on Fox News Monday evening to clarify his statement, saying that he “didn’t misspeak at all” and that “You can’t rebuild our civilization with somebody else’s babies unless we adopt them.”
