MSNBC Adds BreakingNews.com To @BreakingNews Twitter Acquisition
The growing popularity of the @BreakingNews Twitter feed as a real-time news source led to a deal last month in which MSNBC.com would manage the account as a client of online wire service BNO News. Now, MSNBC has announced that they will add a web property — BreakingNews.com — to their digital network in order to compete in the up-to-the-minute news game.
In effect, the site is a glorified Twitter feed with a larger font and SEO-baiting keywords that will provide a streamlined alert system to compliment the content-heavy MSNBC.com site. “Not everyone wants news surrounded by commentary or features,” said Charles Tillinghast, president of the msnbc Digital Network.
“Hard and fast breaking news is currently an underserved market,” he continued. “With www.breakingnews.com we can now provide the optimal solution.”
The terms of the domain name purchase remain undisclosed but you can bet MSNBC had to pony up for such a sought after title, especially because it links so flawlessly with their earlier Twitter acquisition.
The online push by the company also includes the purchase of the “social news site” Newsvine and hyper-local aggregator EveryBlock, placing MSNBC ahead of the pack when it comes to major networks and an online, forward-thinking presence.
