President Obama Reveals What Would Happen If He Sought a Third Term: ‘Michelle Would Divorce Me’
The issue of third presidential terms has been a topic of conversation on the 2016 campaign trail, with many critics of Hillary Clinton long arguing that she would effectively be running to continue the policies of President Barack Obama. But it was an issue that came to light last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the President continued his late night TV circuit and was asked about the potential of a third term.
The President noted that one of the things that made General George Washington a president of nobility was his wisdom in knowing when to step down and essentially establish the precedent of term limits. And despite FDR‘s lengthy term in office (12+ years), President Obama admitted that it wouldn’t be in his cards for one simple personal reason:
“If I were able to run for a third term, Michelle would divorce me,” he joked.
He continued, “So it’s useful I don’t have that choice to make.”
“I know you have to leave,” prompted Kimmel, “but can we keep her for another four years?” Kimmel asked to uproarious cheers from the crowd. First Lady Michelle Obama continues to be a fiercely popular figure among progressives in this country, and has taken an active role in campaigning on Clinton’s behalf this year.
However, that doesn’t mean that they’re not looking forward to the next chapter. “All the women in my life are looking forward to be able to live a more normal life,” the President said about FLOTUS and his daughters.
