Rosanne Cash to John Boehner: ‘Stop Using My Dad’s Name As A Punchline, You Asshat.’

roseanne cashWithout a doubt, Twitter’s best feature is the way it gives public figures a platform to make statements they’d never make otherwise. (Exhibit A: Arnold Schwarzenegger mocking Sarah Palin.) We were reminded of this again early this morning, when Rosanne Cash took to her feed to demand that Rep. John Boehner stop mentioning her late father in his stump speech.

Gawker’s Max Read explains that lately, Boehner’s addresses have included a (fairly lame) reference to the Man in Black:

“Remember when Ronald Reagan was president? We had Bob Hope. We had Johnny Cash. Think about where we are today. We have got President Obama. But we have no hope and we have no cash.”

(Right—because when we think about stars of the ’80s, Bob Hope and Johnny Cash are the two men that immediately spring to mind.)

Apparently, Rosanne has not taken kindly to news of Boehner’s joke. At 12:30 this morning, she slammed the representative on her Twitter page:

John Boehner: Stop using my dad’s name as a punchline, you asshat.

We’d like to give Cash a fist-bump for this—not only because she found a fairly creative way to call someone a jerk, but also because she managed to insult Boehner without mentioning his eerie perma-tan.

Speaker Rosanne Cash? Or will she still be irrelevant tomorrow?

  • timzank

I wonder if she’s aware of the political affiliation of her core (country/country rock) audience? Well, she grew up in California, attended Vanderbilt and Lee Strasbergs acting school, and lives in New York so she probably just doesn’t care. Kind of ironic though, getting wealthy by selling music to republicans and then slamming them. How very “Dixie Chicks” of you.

  • Republitarian

    Who’s Rosanne Cash?

  • BatBoy

It is very tough for a child to follow a parents footstep’s.

Rosanne Cash is just one more example of that.

  • Cancon2

    Asshat, is she 12?

  • BatBoy

Right—because when we think about stars of the ’80s, Bob Hope and Johnny Cash are the two men that immediately spring to mind”

Hillary, if you were writing this article for the 30′s and younger crowd, you would be correct. For the rest of us…(OK, us age challanged seasoned folks) Bob Hope and Johnny Cash would be two people we would think fondly of….

I believe Boehner was using his name in a positive way…unfortunately, Rosanne is the one who made it negative.

Clearly, if she had approved Boehner’s referencing the Cash name, you’d be singing her praises.

So, do you think that artists and actors should keep their political affiliations to themselves?

    Wow,
so people who agree with you could be concerned singer/songwritter/artists who’ve built a c areer out of being true to themselves and following thier own muse.

But if they don’t agree with your dogma, then they’re the overprivilaged coast-biased daughter of a greater person who should mold their thinking and ideas to those of the “supposed” norm of the label you want to hang on them?

Well (to stoop to your level) at least none of your kids will have that concern

Though it’s a pretty innocuous joke, Rosanne has a right to try and protect her father’s name, however she sees fit. Of course she may have been stoned at the time and saw it one too many times on her telly, but if she wants to lash out on behalf of her father, I have no problem with the stance.

  • Fox News:Dividing America is good for our bottom line

Artistic people and people of good conscience almost always despise conservatives.

And the American I-V series were mainstream albums and his best selling albums. So you right wing scum can go FY while listening to Buck Owens or some other shit music that better reflects your despicable nature.

  • Harry Flashman

    Interesting.

Roseanne Cash finally finds a way to get her name used in public that doesn’t involve a biography of her dad.

    Oh, and hey Fox News:

I’m a Johnny Cash fan. He’s very much an American icon. And as much as the concept of agreeing with you about anyhting gives me a rash, I agree with you about the American recordings. Great stuff.

And….Buck Owens is despicable? I. Did. Not. Know. That.

    Thanks.

Someone should explain to Rosanne what a punchline is. Your Dad is in the setup, pumpkin.

  • Corrupt Bastard

That’s right Johnny Cash was a big time liberal and was so bothered by the Iraq war that Rosanne thinks it contributed to his death. He was an iconoclast and a very smart guy so of course he was a liberal. You guys can keep Hank Williams Jr. he is a big time douchebag.

NO, not at all, but they (and their “fans”) should be prepared for the BACKLASH of those who liked their music, but happen to disagree with their political views.

    Quite appropriate comment.

Sorta like those chumpette Dixie Chicks. They were at the top of the game, and faded _really_ quick. However, this broad is a nobody to begin with. She’s probably looking for _any_ publicity.

Oh sure, though I doubt real artists or musicians care. The ones brewed from American Idol and top 40 are probably more likely to keep those ideas hidden, at least until they’ve built a sustainable following. Bands like Dave Matthews and Dixie chicks, who really worked at their music in their respective “scenes” and regions, already had a following and have been at it long enough to have cred with the fans. Those fans would likely still be fans even in a post-controversial public statement scenario. Dixie chicks took a lot of heat after they spoke out against GW in 2003, but they came back to the US and still sold out shows left and right. They still have a solid following and I don’t think I ever hear them on top 40 radio anymore.

Problem is this is a very old joke. I first heard it on a trip to Canada. Goes like this.
Canadian: Did you the signs when you crossed the border? Me; No. Canadian:On the American side it says”Welcome to America. The birthplace of Johnny Cash, George Bush (HW then),Bob Hope, and Stevie Wonder.” Me: “really”. Canadian:”Yes. The one on the Canadian reads ‘Welcome to Canada, we have no Cash, no Bush,no Hope, no Wonder.” Typical Boehner steals an idea, only gets it half right and leaves out the refernce to the sex and the African American..

There was an asshole who use to post as “Big Daddy” at TVNewser who had similar shtick, referring to himself in the third person. It got old after the first week like did with this idiot. That dude got thrown off the board due to his filthy language–what a prick.

Boy Boehner is funny! Now you got about 10 mins to turn this country around, because thats all the time you gave Obama!

  • Sunnyr

I agree with this *itch. Boehner should stop pumping up an old druggie as some kind of hero! Pfft! Talk about an asshat!

  • Big G

So, what I want to know is, what kind of low-life scumbag would ridicule someone for having strong enough family values to stand up to someone that is demeaning their dead father???? The rest of you (detractors) are missing the point. Regardless of political affiliations, I would gladly introduce anyone’s face to my fist for using my Dad’s name to futher their political career at the expense of my Dad’s integrity! If you can’t say the same, then you are part of the problem! Sunnyr – obviously you have no respect for family values. You are talking out of your “asshat”!

Hang on there. She doesn’t have to have EVER had a hit to be qualified to make a statement on this. Her dad was Johnny effing Cash. If she doesn’t want someone using his name in a way she doesn’t approve of, she can say so any day of the week on any platform she chooses. HE was the star, and in his absence she certainly can speak up about it — one hit or one hundred hits.
