Senator Robert C. Byrd Has Died

Sen. Robert C. Byrd, the longest serving senator in U.S. history, died earlier this morning after becoming critically ill over the weekend. Byrd was 92. From the New York Times:

Mr. Byrd was the valedictorian of his high school class but was unable to afford college. It was not until he was in his 30s and 40s that he took college courses. But he was profoundly self-educated and well read. His Senate speeches sparkled with citations from Shakespeare, the King James version of the Bible and the histories of England, Greece and Rome.
[...]
Mr. Byrd served 51 years in the Senate, longer than anyone in American history, and with his six years in the House, he was the longest-serving member of Congress. He held a number of Senate offices, including majority and minority leader and president pro tem.

But the post that gave him the most satisfaction was chairman of the Appropriations Committee, with its power of the purse — a post he gave up only last year as his health declined. A New Deal Democrat, Mr. Byrd used the position in large part to battle persistent poverty in West Virginia, which he called “one of the rock bottomest of states.”

    Rest in peace, Robert.

RIP Sheets, and please America, don’t ever let anyone else from ANY political party serve 51 freaking years again, ever.

  • ordinary

I don’t wish ill will on anyone, and never wish someone would pass on, but I do wish he would have retired from politics years ago. He was the poster child for term limits. The last few years he could hardly talk.

  • http://trickletown.vox.com/ Trickletown

I’ll miss his Shakespearean presence. The gulf of time he lived through makes it easy for me to forgive him his early choices. He apologized endlessly for succumbing to zeitgeist of those days. God speed Bob Byrd!

  • MichelleF

Wow, not ONE word of him being a high ranking member of the KKK in that obit. Do you remmeber Glynnis when Reagan died, how he was vilified even in death. And I don’t recall him ever going to a clan meeting. Way to whitewash who he was.

  • http://trickletown.vox.com/ Trickletown

    Klan, not ‘clan’ you halfwit.

  • MichelleF

Sorry trickleton. I don’t have as much experience with the KLAN as your side of the isle. Thanks for pointing out the error in such a respectful manner MORON!

Robert Byrd serves as a reminder that it is possible for people to repent and break free from the dark voices which (still) dominate the right side of our political spectrum.

This is why you’re f*cking despicable. I don’t believe in making more out of a man in death than in life, I’ll leave that to Republicans with Reagan. But this man just died, can’t you wait a week? Byrd renounced his views long ago, isn’t Christianity all about forgiveness or did you miss that when Glenn Beck was telling you to fear social justice while at the same time comparing himself to Dr. King? You’re honestly the worst type of person show some f*cking respect for once, oh wait, respect is only due when its a Republican.

  • BR

The “pass” that Byrd has been given by the press and liberals (one in the same) proves what racists liberals are.

Is that what they teach you in your church Michelle, that people learning life’s lessons is impossible and that there should be no such thing as forgiveness and redemption. You live in such a vindictive small world that you can’t even be decent about someone’s death,. You are some piece of work.

  • MichelleF

RL, I was commenting on the media coverage, since this is a media site. As SOON as Reagan died, he was being vilified and as I watched the funeral procession, it continued. I don’t really care if you have a problem with my pointing out the media hypocricy. Save your faux outrage for someone else, I’m not interested.

  • MichelleF

Iris, I appreciate you trying to divert what I was saying. My comment is specific to the media coverage. If he repented for his sins, then I applaud him, but that doesn’t really have anything to do with the media’s glaring omission.

Politicians will always speak about term limits but at the end of the day, they’re not going to enact them. Maybe when a democrat keeps winning the Presidency, but otherwise you can forget it. Prime example, the Republican class of 94 enacted most of what they planned to, but term limits got lost in the muck somehow.

Yeah, see that’s the difference between me and you; my outrage at your complete and utter respect for human life is real. I have a problem with your complete and utter lack of respect for any non-Republican. And as I recall, everybody on MSNBC, CNN and predictably Fox said we lost a great American. Those who criticized him as soon as he died were wrong too. I don’t like Reagan in many respects, but when he died, I showed respect. I ask the same of others but apparenty your particular brand of ilk only cares about playing the victim and justifying their actions through idiotic means you’re truly sad.

  • MichelleF

For all of you who are SO outraged that anyone would mention Byrd’s past, here is the HEADLINE of the NYT when Strom Thurmond died:

Strom Thurmond, foe of integration, dead at 100

  • MichelleF

    And today’s NYT headline:

Robert Byrd, voice of the senate, dies at 92.

  • Iris

One obit is now is now the entire media in your mind. Everyone who has seen and read the media coverage knows full well that his entire life history was not omitted in the coverage. Very poor excuse for your behavoir.

  • shootfromthehip

Michelle I am sickened by the lack of respect you show here. The man just died. The NAACP forgave him 20 years ago and have even honored him for his recent voting record.

  • MichelleF

Ok for that last time, I NEVER made any judgments on the man, my comment was about the media coverage. Now, either you libs aren’t smart enough to figure that out by my post or you do know and you just like to twist people’s words. So which is it, are you not bright or just dishonest?

WRONG!!!! You’re urging the media to report the worse elements of a man that just died, which is wrong regardless as to his positions. Now either you’re just an idiot or you’re just trying to twist this, I’ll go with C: all of the above. YOU can’t say anything about twisting words “thanks for admitting I’m right”. You need to see a psychiatrist.

  • shootfromthehip

Dear Michelle, can you even read? You whine and cry like a cunt about how the liberal NYT has “not one word” about the KKK in the obit.

You are a liar. Read their obit.

“Mr. Byrd’s political life could be traced to his early involvement with the Ku Klux Klan, an association that almost thwarted his career and clouded it intermittently for years afterward. In the early 1940s, he organized a 150-member klavern, or chapter, of the Klan in Sophia, W.Va., and was chosen its leader at a meeting. After the meeting, Joel L. Baskin, the Klan’s grand dragon for the region, suggested that Mr. Byrd use his “talents for leadership” by going into politics.”

    WHO IS THE IDIOT?

    THAT WOULD BE YOU.

    WHO IS DISHONEST?

    THAT WOULD BE YOU!

  • MichelleF

No RL, I was pointing out the media double-standard on reporting when people on the left and people on the right pass. It doesn’t matter how many times you say it, it doesn’t change what I said. Nice try though.

  • MichelleF

Shoot, I pointed out their headline, I didn’t say anyting about what the actual article said. Seriously, I feel like I’m in the twilight zone with I try to talk to libs. You live in your own alternate universe where you hear what you want to hear. Now, I’m sorry that you all have problems with reading comprehension, but I don’t have anymore time to explain it to you.

Once again you point out your own stupidity. Robert Byrd wasn’t even left, he was right, hence the term blue dog democrat being applied to him. It does change it because you’re wrong. Look at fox news when Ted Kennedy died, they brought up Chappaquiddick on every show. Sean Hannity even said he wasn’t going to talk about it then did. They even brought it up on MSNBC. I’m not changing anything, simply proving how much of an idiot you are like your idols Palin and Beck.

So you didn’t even read the article? God you’re sad. You of all people talk about reading comprehension that’s like Palin talking about intelligence.

  • MichelleF

So you didn’t even read the article?

Did I say that? NO. I said my comment was directed at the headline, not the article. Man it really is impossible for the left to tell the truth isn’t it? Thanks for continually proving that point. And don’t ever bother trying to put byrd in out camp.

As for Kennedy, I kept quiet about him when he died, but did worry about what he would say when he finally had to answer for his actions. Luckily, even if you escape punishment in this life, you can’t escape it in the next. Perhaps if he had owned up to his actions and repented in this life, but he didn’t, did he.

  • BR

Michelle: You are trying to reason with liberals. Why bother?

  • shootfromthehip

Michelle, this is the first sentence from the first post you left on this thread:

“Wow, not ONE word of him being a high ranking member of the KKK in that obit.”

    Just admit it, you’re busted.

  • shootfromthehip

You said nothing about a “headline.”

  • Iris

Michelle, now you can’t even leave Kennedy alone, Why do you insist on being so vile. The saddest thing is you hurt yourself more than anyone by filling yourself with so much hate. You can change that, a simple maybe i was wrong would be a good start. It’s really not that hard for a person to change their heart. God rest his soul Robert Byrd showed us it can be done.

The article mentions it though, so only the headline has the substance of the article? No, it just gives the topic, so once again your logic is flawed and you are LYING. And yes, Byrd was a conservative primarily, but like most sane people he held views of right and left. he stayed democrat even as they switched from social conservatives to social liberals, whereas those like Strom Thurmond switched. Let me give you a list of Byrd’s positions; states rights, limit gay marriage and serving in the military, opposes affirmative action, voted to confirm Alito, opposed confirmation of tim Geithner. He was also a member of the gang of 14. You are sadly mistaken here, he was far more conservative than liberal. Look into things rather than spouting errant bullsh*t and assuming every democrat is liberal and every republican is conservative, even Reagan wasn’t the conservative stronghold you undoubtedly believe him to be.

Kennedy did apologize, and he even put his future in the hands of the people of Massachusetts to decide. They chose for him to stay on. And as I recall, God took a murderer by the name of Moses and had him do great things. Am I comparing Kennedy to Moses? No! Am I saying God forgives a misguided, drunken, scared fool and does great things with him? Durn skippy! God forgives all manner of men, unless you’re one of the cursed lamanites I suppose.

Anyone with a brain can see I was commenting on media coverage from my very first post. Enjoy your delusion, my liberal friends.

  • MichelleF

    Iris,
Normally I try to ignore you, like I do a fly that is buzzing around, but regarding Kennedy. The man was responsible for a woman’s death. Ask yourself this, if you were part of mary jo’s family and you knew Kennedy was responsible for her death and yet for the rest of his you had to hear about what a great person he was, how would that make you feel? I’m sticking up for the victim here and you are defending a murderer. I’m pretty sure I’m on the right side of that one. Why not look in the mirror before you start judging me.

  • BR

Michelle: Byrd and Kennedy were both evil men. The fact that they had a D next to their names is all that the liberals need to defend them. The posts here prove that. You are trying to rationalize with irrational people……liberals.

  • timzank

Chill out y’all, just another old thievin’ cracker that kicked the bucket. He was ninety freakin two years old, not exactly a shock on his “passing”. This woman Michelle is ruining this website. What the death of Robert Byrd shows is the power of redemption. Robert Byrd completely disavowed his racist past and proved it by all his actions for the past 40-50 years. I wish more of the right-wing people who troll these websites could understand how their views and values are no so dissimilar from the racists, fascists and phoney patriots who inhabit the loony right.

Hogan: michelle was cursed at even being called a “cunt” because she dared to speak her mind about Byrd and Kennedy. And you call ME out for calling them “liberals”? What I said was true and I stand by it. Liberals (for the most part, theres always an exception) gave Byrd and Kennedy a pass because there is a D next to their name(s). Michelle was trying to have a rational conversation with two irrational people. What part of that is NOT true?

  • MichelleF

Thanks BR. The funny thing about Hogan is he’s called me a racist in the past and is now defending Byrd. Of course, he was forced to retract it when I demanded he back it up and he couldn’t. I can’t quite wrap my head around that one. I broke one of my rules today by trying to engage libs in conversation when they should just be ignored, but i just couldn’t help it!!

  • BR

Michelle: Most liberals that I have met are just not very happy people and it shows by their comments. Dont let them drag you down to their level.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Hogan/179500970 Stephen Hogan

Michelle: I have never called you a racist. I know that to be a fact because I don’t use that language, especially on a website in which I use my facebook profile as a log-in. In fact, I’m a little surprised that you would accuse me of that, given that we have had very civil discussions before. I’m not saying that you are making it up, but you at least have me confused with someone else.

And I’m not defending Byrd’s past. I just believe that people can redeem themselves of past mistakes and transgressions through forgiveness and good works. He has certainly done this. I was also surprised that there was no mention of that dark aspect of Byrd’s past in the obit in question.

BR: I did not see someone call her a ‘c***’, but if someone did, it was uncalled for. I’m just tired of the name calling in general. There is potential for really great discussion in these comments, and every now and then, I find one. But, for the most part, I see people calling each other ‘tea-bagger’ and ‘lib shill’. It saddens me a bit because the dehumanization that both sides are guilty of prevents us from actually reaching compromise and getting anything done.

  • MichelleF

Michelle: I have never called you a racist.

Stephen, if it was a different liberal Stephen H on this site, then I apologize. I’m insulted so much it’s hard to keep track.

  • shootfromthehip

Michelle moved the goalpost as the thread evolved, just lie the best GOP liar “pundits” on Fox.

Anyone can see it if they just scroll up.

First, she said “Wow, not ONE word of him being a high ranking member of the KKK in that obit. Do you remmeber Glynnis when Reagan died, how he was vilified even in death.”

Then she said she was “commenting on the media coverage.”

Then she claimed she was only talking about the “headline,” something she did not say initially and a distinction not made.

Then, when confronted w ith the truth that the NYT did indeed mention Byrd’s past with the KKK, she said:

“I didn’t say anything about what the actual article said”

Well isn’t that the god dam point?

You accuse the “media” of some kind of Byrd cover up and then you admit that you don’t even read the story.

You really are the worst kind of cancer on this country, Michelle.

I’ll insult you again and again until you learn to reflect the facts and the truth.

  • shootfromthehip

I demonstrably proved you were a liar before, and I’ll do it again.

“Wow, not ONE word of him being a high ranking member of the KKK in that obit.”

Here are more than 50 words in the exact same obit you said had not “one word” about him being in the KKK.
