Stephen Colbert Mocks U.C. Berkeley Campus Police For Attacking Occupy Protesters

video

In the past few months, Stephen Colbert has ridiculed all sides of the Occupy Wall Street story. He’s made fun of unfair blaming of the unemployed , the sometimes oddball protesters themselves and, of course, the media’s coverage of the entire spectacle. So far he’s mostly avoided the police actions in Occupy protests across the country, until last night, when he mocked baton-wielding cops beating demonstrators at the campus of U.C. Berkeley.

Colbert’s dig was pegged to a video depicting a peaceful protest turned violent at the Cal campus that recently went viral. Watch the clip below, courtesy of Comedy Central:

Wow, he shows a clip of the protest, a what………about .3 second clip then shows a still photo attempting to foment a narrative.

Geez, great clip. You go Colbert. You prove that these protests are benign and peaceful with a clip like that. Forget about informing anyone on your show about the murders now, the TB outbreak and other components.

Yep, those peaceful folks………if they are so great, why not go down and join them for an evening or two there Colbert. Not a few minutes to get some vid dressed as Che, the left hero. Go down for a few days and hang out. Come on, you can do it.

  • Sean68

“Sprole” plaza? No good liberal like Colbert should mispronounce the birthplace of the free speech movement!

  • Anonymous

    Q.  What’s the difference between the Occupy movement and your dog?

    A.  If you leave your dog’s poop out on the sidewalk, you get arrested unless you clean it up.  If an Occupier poops on the sidewalk, he can leave it their and still get praised by the liberal media.

  • Cbbruuno

I suggest you find the full clip, it is all over the net. It is pretty bad and bizarre behavior by the cops. Even in the Colbert clip you can tell that the cops suddenly start the attack when the protesters are doing absolutely nothing (at least physically) and the first one the hit is a smallish woman who is doing absolutely nothing.

  • Anonymous

Sounds like it came from Highlights joke section.

You know that EVERYONE thinks these ‘Occupiers’ are full of it when Berkley, the bastion of Liberalism and Leftist thinking, is fed up with them.

  • Farnsworth

You’re like the diametric opposite of independent thought. You’re like some sort of ball-licking Spinbot. A lonely and very boring ball-licking Spinbot

  • Huxley51

It’s spelled B-E-R-K-E-L-E-Y, and no one in Berkeley is fed up with “them” because the students who were protesting never occupied anything for any period of time. The police under orders from an idiotic vice-chancellor made the mistake of using uncalled-for violence. Get you spelling and your facts straight.

  • Kahlid Shiek Yerbouti

If we were to view the actions of police as Americans watching people attempting to gain their rights in a foreign country, we would find them appalling.  Yet somehow there are those in this country who are all too happy to deny rights afforded to all Americans under the  constitution.  The right of peaceful assembly is guaranteed and those who seek to deny them are ignorant of this “fact.”

  • http://twitter.com/TommyBennett Tom Bennett

Do some research, dim wit, before ranting like a troll.

  • Mencius

The more the police brutally crack down on the movement, and the more the Right spreads lies about the protests, the more people who have sat on the sidelines will join.

  • Pablo

Sproul Plaza is the birthplace of the free speech movement like Chicago is the birthplace of pizza.

  • Pablo

The right to peaceful assembly does not include any time and any place you like.

  • Anonymous

My aren’t we the touchy one…LOL  The Berkley students don’t do much of anything for any period of time now do they?  Thanks for clearing that up for everyone…LOL

  • Pablo

    Which lies?

  • Bobbi

It is blatantly incorrect to suggest that the University of California, Berkeley is the bastion of liberalism and leftist thinking. The university is an academic institution, and as such, similar to most other tier 1 institutions (e.g., pick any Ivy League school), has many left-leaning faculty members. However, this is not because it is ‘Berkeley’, it is simply because academics are on average less conservative. This is just a fact of nature these days, in the same way that there is an inverse relationship between scientific literacy and religiosity. Most Americans tend to conflate the zaniness of Berkeley the city with the academic credibility of Berkeley the institution, and many of the posts here underscore this point. The free-speech movement in the 60s included students but also numerous ‘city strays’. It was not organized by university administration, which might otherwise speak to a liberal, university-based agenda. This was not the case then, and it is not the case now.

    Herp Derp!

  • Kahlid Shiek Yerbouti

Pablo, go back and read the constitution, you missed some things.

  • Pablo

Like what? I think the question at hand is answered here:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

If there’s an absolute right to assemble anywhere, anytime, you won’t mind if a couple dozen of my closest friends and I come over and Occupy Your Living Room, right?

  • caconservative

It’s lovingly called, “the peoples republic of bizerkly”! Well….maybe not so loveingly….

  • caconservative

    What people?

  • Sean68

I think you know I was being facetious. The last thing the lefties who took over our university system in California are interested in is free speech.

  • http://www.facebook.com/marla.louise Marla Louise

Ah, so your logic is, the Constitution and rights only apply when no one minds?  But if someone minds, the Constitution needs to take a back seat?   Just want to understand your logic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/marla.louise Marla Louise

“The right to peaceful assembly does not include any time and any place you like.”

Please point me to where this clause can be found in the constitution?   Or did you just make it up?

But actually I agree with you.   But that exception should only apply in the most grievous of circumstances.  Doubt should and must first go to the 1st amendment.  Otherwise, it’s meaningless.

  • Anonymous

What comedy?   We all understand that pooping on the sidewalk passes for serious protest among the Left.

  • http://www.davidjkramer.co.cc// DavidKramer

Do you know what PUBLIC and PRIVATE mean?

Also, even in public areas, when protests interfere with the rights of others, that is against the law.

Like when the fruitcakes would not let people leave. That is false imprisonment.

Or are you going to say it is fine to trap people and hold them against their will?

  • http://www.davidjkramer.co.cc// DavidKramer

Do you think they will be able to use this as the Kent State moment? Do you think?

  • Anonymous

Now we know that Occupiers read Highlights.

Then again, we probably could have figured that out by watching them interviewed on TV.

  • Zap

I thought UC Berkeley was a PUBLIC university?  Don’t the tax payers of California essentially “own” the school & its grounds?

  • Bobbi

    Hey, Zap,

The campus accepts about 10-12% of public money (or 88-90% private), and so in this respect it has a public veneer. However, the land itself is private property. The building managers all know this and there are metal signs in the sidewalks surrounding the place that also communicate this point.

    –Best!

  • Anonymous

Yet many of the ignorant get their news from the likes of Colbert and Stewart!!!

No wonder why this Country is so f*%& uped!!

  • Anonymous

I actually have read Highlights when I was younger. Your joke reminded me of those times. I may not read Highlights anymore, but I see you must  of had your subscription renewed.

  • Anonymous

    Typical Leftist rationalization.

  • Anonymous

You went from reading Highlights to watching Stephen Colbert.  I’m not sure whether that is a step up or a step down. Maybe you can stretch yourself intellectually and try out a People magazine a sudoku.

I am not a member of a political party, I am a scientist, and try to be as open, honest, skeptical, and objective as possible. Every sentence above is simply factual, nothing more, nothing less.

If a person watches that clip and comes out of it with any feelings other than anger at the police there, that person is a  a**hole.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VFQSLJBGIKXCO4IDL4URXW2AQA Wilkby

One could argue that the right to bear arms doesn’t include semi-automatic assault weapons, using your logic.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VFQSLJBGIKXCO4IDL4URXW2AQA Wilkby

I think you are wasting your time with this one. He probably says “nucular,” too.

Cbbruno flushed your stunted, obscene, reflexive words forward to reveal what you smarmingly allude to as “thinking”. The heightened shaming of our nation when the Army National Guard in Ohio fired on and murdered those 4 innocent Kent State students protesting the criminal U.S. war on Vietnam, and the images were broadcast before the world in 1970, during the hourly vast airwarfare, napalming, B-52 “carpet” bomblings cities, huge swaths of an agrarian society, of Agent Orange toxic chemical food deprivation of a population, is a legacy that even craven rightist beasts like you, should know better than to remind us of as  a “moment” to be “used”. Colbert’s use of fleeting images of the swarming, murderous herd of “innocent” Simi Valley police beasts beating the supine, flailing Rodney King, the few moments of hours of newsreels decades earlier of baton wielding troopers beating, attacking dogs, torrents of high pressure fire hoses wielded on brave citizens struggling for all of our civil rights, sufficed. The photos of lynchings, piles of peasant Vietnamese children at My Lai, were omitted, mercifully, necklaces of Vietnamese ears adorning the invading U.S. troops necks, the helicopter bombing of the home and incineration of the Move members in Philadelphia, and just for you, the inferno at Waco, TX..not included. How about General MacArthur’s clearing out the occupying bonus marchers, Rockefeller’s slaughter at Attica Prison of 43 guards and inmates, Pinkerton’s slaughtering miners at Ludlow, Colorado? Many grahic precedents you could have urged in your inverted rightist “morality”. But stick to your admiration for the suited-up Berkeley enforcers…try the full length version of the footage 4 or 5 times.Keep your eye on helmet # 14, the aggressive piece of shit as he plunges his baton into the unresistent solar plexis’, ribs of the frontline students, lunging over and over, swinging, beating, much like the White Shirt NYPD armed bullies do, enjoy you punk, these first skirmishes reveal the cowardices of your frontline, and soon, just as happened in Vietnam, your troops will falter, will eventually frag, and you tough guys go down before the righteous, courageous, committed folks like those being beaten at the hands of your temporary flunkey shock troops.

You need to read your history because the “Free Speech Movement” has a very specific meaning—one that predates your wild imaginings of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Terry-Chay/3502094 Terry Chay

True, but this was fought almost fifty years ago on those very steps and the Board of Regents, which does control the University of California at Berkeley, decided that the students have this right. The Vice-chancellor (as a proxy of the chancellor) is arguing that pitching a tent is a “bridge too far” in terms of the exercise of their first amendment rights.

While, I understand their concern (they’re worried about the optics of a Hooverville in Berkeley and appearing to be “left-leaning”), I would guess that the tents are mostly symbolic (to find common cause with the other Occupy movement, not because these students, who are paying a sizable amount of money in tuition, actually need living quarters).

You should also be aware that the pair have already been reprimanded for similar actions in 2009. Nobody cared back then because it was about student tuition, but the common cause with “Occupy” is much, much larger. My guess is this is going to be the straw that breaks the Chancellor’s back. To save his job, he will have to convince the board that his intentions were miscommunicated since he was not on campus at the time. But sooner or later, he’ll repeat this mistake and the Board will act.

Sure, for Cal, being labeled a bunch of granola-eating pachoulie-smelling hippies is bad, the optics of police brutality is worse. Whether or not it was illegal, the court of public opinion has already ruled. And that’s why the video is viral.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Terry-Chay/3502094 Terry Chay

Bobbi and DavidKramer, this is a red herring. The Board of Regents ruled 47 years ago that the students have the right to protest at Sproul Hall.

Also, your numbers are way off. One quarter of the funding of Cal Berkeley comes directly from the state. The other three-quarters are from public and private sources. I would imagine the Federal Grants and the $3.15 billion endowment both eclipse, private funding (by the way, I believe the single largest private funding source was given to Berkeley by BP—sort of ironic that people can talk about Berkeley being “taken over by the Left” (as one commenter put it above) when their largest private funding comes from the private company that committed the largest environmental disaster in recent memory.

That last fact also explains why the Chancellor has not been fired by the Board of Regents yet.

How lazy can you get. The full clip has already been widely seen: the protesters were obviously non-violent and extremely heavy violence was wielded upon them.
Just because you can’t be bothered paying attention, don’t turn around and blame that on others, kiddo.
It seems some of you neo-fascists would also be Assad supporters if you lived in Syria.

In other words, your understanding of reality is damaged beyond all measure, and has been taken over by pure, irrational, childish hatred. Oh and blood lust for anyone whose speech you disagree with. Because you are such a stalwart for free speech, right kiddo?

  • Zer0Veritas

Wow, way to be completely biased in your posting. There are thousands of homicides and deaths everyday just because it happened at a camp site doesn’t mean it had anything to do with the protesting itself, sounds like you need to wake up and see what is actually going on around you David. There is a revolution going on and if you don’t open your eyes you will completely miss it. The world is changing, people are tired of living like slaves to a greedy and corrupt system.

    Viva la revolution!

  • Zer0Veritas

says the guy who is commenting on a clip he just watched himself and with a simpsons avatar. LMAO!!!

  • Bobbi

Following from Terry’s comment: yes, you are correct to suggest that my dichotomizing of public/private funding was misleading (e.g., 88-90% private, since that comes from public and private sources, like research grants that in part derive from tax dollars). The basic point with “public” schools, as we know, is that some portion of their funding comes from local states/governments. In this respect, Oxford and Cambridge are also “public” but it is important to know that the Wiki statistic is outdated. Currently, 10-12% of Berkeley money hails from the state of CA. Bob Birgeneau commented on this just a few months ago. Cheers, —B

  • Bobbi

Also, following from Terry’s comment below: I saw his blog, and please recognize that I have been quoted entirely out of context. There has never been an aim in any of my comments to justify behavior. This is a classic symptom of the naturalistic fallacy. Science can only tell you what is, not what ought to be. We may be able to understand and explain the biology of irrational decisions but this in no way justifies their actions. Data simply have no bearing on the issue.

Well said, EmmetGrogan, very well said.  Anyone who can look at the UCB video, or even worse the UC Davis pepper spraing video, and somehow think the students, who as tuition-paying, enrolled students at the universities, have EVERY legal right to be doing what they are doing, because it is THEIR lives that are directly being affected by what is happening to the UC system and the entire economic/ political mess, are to blame for being beaten or somehow deserve it, has clearly lost a major part of their humanity.  I can’t find stronger words to express the contempt I feel for those who call themselves ‘human’ but can’t find the balls to actually be on the side of humanity, without lapsing into a cursing rant. DavidKramer and his ilk:  WHAT ARE YOU AND WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?  One must question whether you have ever had a true human feeling or not.  Surely you must be dead inside.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Charest/1621550844 Jeff Charest

Moron, I lived in Oakland for 16 years, and believe me, “Sprole” plaza is a common pronunciation.  Not correct, but common enough that it only proves how fascinated fools like you are with irrelevant, completely useless trivia.  You’re so dumb, you think the mispronunciation of an awkwardly spelled name constitutes some kind of ideological failure!  Oh, sorry, maybe I should include  a link to an online dictionary so you can understand what that last sentence means.  :P

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Charest/1621550844 Jeff Charest

Yeah nice job–you made a ‘poop’ joke.  Wow.  Beavis and Butthead are writing this one down for their next movie.  Do you know any good ‘peeing on little girl’ jokes too?  The world is waiting!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Charest/1621550844 Jeff Charest

Uh, you should just go back to watching internet porn and leave the political commentary to the grown-ups.  The ‘them’ you’re referring to IS Berkeley.  The cops and the campus administration do not represent Berkeley, they only represent the UCB administration.  WIthout the STUDENTS, the ALUMNI, and FACULTY who supports the movement, Berkeley would not be.  Clearly you’ve never lived there, so don’t talk about what you don’t know.  Another moron.
