The U.S. Treasury has announced that the government will impose new sanctions against multiple Russian citizens and Kremlin-backed organizations for their interference in American politics during the 2016 election.
The sanctions on Russian entities focus on the Internet Research Agency, a Russian troll farm known for spreading divisive political social media content throughout 2016. Other Russian entities that will be punished for their activities include the Federal Security Service and the Main Intelligence Directorate.
“The administration is confronting and countering malign Russian cyber activity, including their attempted interference in U.S. elections, destructive cyber-attacks, and intrusions targeting critical infrastructure,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. “These targeted sanctions are a part of a broader effort to address the ongoing nefarious attacks emanating from Russia.”
The new sanctions come weeks after Robert Mueller indicted over a dozen Russian nationals for their “information warfare” activities during the election. More recently, the Russian government has drawn international condemnation for their alleged involvement in the chemical attack against Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
