Warren Buffett: ‘Trickle Down’ Theory Hasn’t Worked (VIDEO)

video

Billionaire Warren Buffett said that the Bush tax cuts should be allowed to expire for the richest Americans and that the “trickle down” economic theory hasn’t worked.

“If anything, taxes for the lower and middle class and maybe even the upper middle class should even probably be cut further,” Buffett told ABC News in an interview set to air later this week. “But I think that people at the high end — people like myself — should be paying a lot more in taxes. We have it better than we’ve ever had it.”

“The rich are always going to say that, you know, just give us more money and we’ll go out and spend more and then it will all trickle down to the rest of you. But that has not worked the last 10 years, and I hope the American public is catching on,” Buffett said in the clip from ABC News’ “This Week with Christiane Amanpour.”

Put your money were your mouth is old man, granted, he gives millions to charities but if he believes what he says he’d VOLUNTARILY write a check to UNCLE SAM wouldn’t he?

Missed the big point, didn’t you? Spending is higher than we can sustain. So, the choice is to raise taxes and become like a European countries and endure high employment and a lower standard of life, or be America and spend wisely.

Perhaps mediaite should end it’s content agreement with TPM. This post was propaganda not an interesting post about Buffet.

Fact: Warren Buffett: ‘Trickle Down’ Theory Hasn’t Worked. US tax payer’s money on bailouts helped Warren Buffets businesses though and he still bloviates about everyone should pay more.

Really a retired billionaire should not talk about reducing the zero percent tax levied on the majority of Americans.

  • redwriteblue

If Americans are wondering why they are having such a hard time finding another job to replace the ones they have lost during this Recession they have another Republican “Big Idea” like the “Trickle-Down Theory” to thank for it:

Buffet wins again! I wish more people would listen to Buffet. I’m much more inclined to listen to one of the greatest investors and capitalists in history than John Boehner.

Doesn’t Buffet read newspapers? The “Millionaire Tax” was voted down by the people in Washinton. There should be NO income tax on anyone.

If we tax less, how do you propose we cut down on our deficit? And simply cutting government down isn’t enough; unless we cut into our military and defense spending, there’s no way we’ll be able to knock out our debt with any efficiency.

Is senility setting in for Warren? Or is it a case of “I got mine, F— you.”

Actually he said the rich should pay more, not everyone.

I’m confused. Unless you are rich this isn’t an attack on you. He supports cutting taxes for us. Why is this a bad thing? If you are rich, then I apologize, and wonder if you have any job openings.

LOL—-L@@@K at the righties, who just HATE to admit, that Reagan’s brain (?) child of Trickle down NEVER worked, and that every statistic showed, that Bush giving a 10 year discount on Taxes was the REASON we are in this mess ! What part did you Einstein’s miss—-that these tax cuts which STARVED the Government of revenue is what caused the Recession in 2007, along with an illegal invasion and a Failed one ! You would think these asshats on here, were the Wealthy 2% raking in all that money!

You SAW, 10 years of These companies raking in RECORD profits ! Paying RECORD bonuses to top execs. You SAW EVERY one of them downsizing and shipping jobs overseas! Yet you are still out there blubbering that SOMEHOW this idea of taking back the 10 year break they got on their money is bad!

My Gawd—God must love stupid people—he made SO many of you ! Put your man pants on, dummies, and admit it was an awful mistake !

Gordie, I shake my head when I see you and your comments on this site. Let me give you a little advice, if you wish to use our highways and bridges, if you want your spawn educated, if you want First responders to crimes committed against you and fires in your house, if you want Security for this country, and your food and drugs reseached, then stfu and pay your share or else MOVE to Iceland or Ireland, both of whom have lower tax rates than the USA!

Your constant appearance on these threads indicate someone with way too much time on their hands! .

  • CAconservative

Ya, that’s it dufus, open the door to more intrusive taxation by this inept, and corrupt government to force people to pay for their stupidity. The problem is, it isn’t going to stop with the rich! When the rich decide enough is enough, then who the hell are they going to come after to pay for their gross-negligence?!! The amount of tax money taken in, and the amount of waist by this government is already absurd.

  • J Baustian

No one in either party is really talking about taxing the rich. Not the real rich: the Rockefellers and Kennedys and Hiltons, etc.

The genuine rich have their money safely ensconced in tax-free or tax-exempt or tax-deferred investments — they pay millions for the best tax attorneys, so they don’t have to pay tens or hundreds of millions in annual taxes.

No, what is being discussed especially by the Democrats is taking a bigger chunk from the people who WANT to be rich — the entrepreneurs. Not the billionaires but those who want to be billionaires. Their wealth is not locked away in tax-exempt shelters, it is working for them and whatever they make each year is 100% taxable.

This is why Warren Buffett can say he’s for taxing the rich — because nobody is talking about changes to the tax code that will affect him one way or the other. If the Bush era tax cuts are allowed to expire, it will not make any difference at all to Buffett or Gates or any of the other relatively famous billionaires.

If you want to tax the rich, then don’t focus on tax rates — focus on the definition of taxable income. Include every bit of income, from every source, even accrued but unrealized capital gains, even the implied rental income from owner occupied housing. Whatever adds to your wealth is income. THEN, tax this greatly-expanded tax base at a much lower rate — a single rate for everyone, so that every voter knows he can’t get something free from the government by making someone else pay for it.

  • PBerg

“The genuine rich have their money safely ensconced in tax-free or tax-exempt or tax-deferred investments — they pay millions for the best tax attorneys, so they don’t have to pay tens or hundreds of millions in annual taxes.”

I hate to tell you this, Baustian—but deferred merely means putting off the taxes until a later date. That date always comes! At 701/2, are you aware that the IRS FORCES you to start taking your money out of IRA’s and Retirement accounts, so they can start to tax it? Are you aware, whateve you have stuck away, is what the ESTATE tax is all about? You can’t take it with you—and you can not avoid death or taxes !

But Bush sure gave the Wealthy in this country a real honeymoon ride ! You think Koch Brothers are complaining they should be taxed at the same rate all their employees are???? FAT CHANCE !

  • http://none pyrope

Trickle down economics certainly created a lot of jobs in the US once it took hold. What was the unemployment rate from 1987 onward? It was NOT however a panacea, but I’ll guaran-damn-tee you that trickle down would work better than trickle up.

You really need to put away your computer. You don’t deserve any answers to anything. Yesterday I listed all the misstakes you made asking me questions.

Where did I say there would be NO tax or less tax?
Did you ever hear of the FAIR TAX? No, I am sure you have not. It replaces the income tax and all other payroll taxes and brings in MORE money and the poor pay NO taxes, even sales taxes. LOOK it up. Many republican candidate ran on the issue. Huckabee also supports it.

Now don’t bother me unless you know what you are talking about.

You should shake you head. YOU are stupid. You like another poster have no idea what you are talking about. Did I say there would be NO taxes? I said there should be NO income tax. We should tax consumption not productivity. I know you can’t grasp that concept.

You are talking about wealth not income. You want to tax peoples wealth. People like Kennedy didn’t earn much every year, he lived on his inherited wealth.
You hate people that make money and have money. I don’t.
If we taxed consumption everyone would pay taxes based on what they spend not what they make. The rich spend more than the poor because they have more to spend. Therefore they would be taxed more.
Now I know you have all kinds of nonsense about how that isn’t fair but that is because you are brainwashed by the phony lies about fairness and economic justice.
The FAIR TAX is the answer and the poor pay NO taxes. That is fair.
The government does deserve part of anyone wages, they do nothing to make the money that people work hard to earn. The government does not deserve any of my money after I die. They did nothing to earn it or save it.

Thanks Warren….the millionaires, billionaires should have their taxes increased to 39%…that’s not asking too much…. Before Reagan they used to pay up to 80%. taxes should also be based on their assets in and outside this country. The upper middle, middle and lower classes should have their taxes reduced…they would spend their money and start encouraging savings by having banks pay anywhere from 3-5% for peoples money in their banks. Stocks etc., are gambling…us small folksshouldn’t be forced to do that with our money. If you don’t have big time investment bankers advising you on how invest you’re shitout of luck….unless you have lots of time to just learn and check on your investments. If you’re a working person with a family it’s almost impossible to do.

Sorry, I didn’t catch that post pointing out all my mistakes.

And I did hear about the Fair Tax. Honestly, however, I believe it’s simply a way for higher-income makers to pay less tax, putting the burden more on the middle-class citizens who rely more on personal consumption to live as opposed to someone in a higher economic bracket.

And yes, under the Fair Tax the poor would receive a ‘prebate’ to offset the extra they’d spend through sales tax. But think about it, the poor barely pay much taxes as it is under our current system. So in essence, the poor wouldn’t feel any difference, the rich would have lower tax liabilities, and the middle class would be seeing a significant increase in the money they pay.

That doesn’t sound too fair to me.

  • timcajun

The teas want to slam Buffet, but the fact remains, the tax has been set at what the conservatives wanted for 10 years and they were wrong! It doesn’t work as they say. The big companies have that rate now! Are they hiring, NO! Start the cover and blame Obama and being unsure, fine! What about the last several years, no jobs! The teas are worried about the 2% and they are not even among them, why?

Warren Buffett is one of the few honest men in business and politics today. There are people who will argue what is right like Warren Buffett and there are those who will argue who is right in business and politics.
Kudos to Warren Buffet, if there is a Heaven he will surely get there someday. To those who pervert the truth for personal gains or for a simple pay check, good luck buster, you will soon need it.
