‘Unite the Right’ Organizer Gets Approval for ‘White Civil Rights’ Rally in DC on Anniversary of Charlottesville
The organizer behind last year’s deadly Charlottesville rally has just received approval to hold a rally across from the White House on Aug. 12.
Jason Kessler, a white supremacist and one of the primary organizers behind the Unite the Right rally, applied for a permit for a “white civil rights” rally to be held on Lafayette Square.
The purpose of the gathering, according to The Washington Post, is to protest “civil rights abuse in Charlottesville.” While the request has been approved, a permit has not yet been issued.
Kessler had first tried to apply for a rally permit in Charlottesville for the same day, but that permit was denied.
Last year’s Charlottesville rally erupted into violent brawls and took the life of Heather Heyer, an anti-racism activist and paralegal who died after a car drove through a group of counterprotesters. She was 32. A total of 19 others were also injured in the car attack.
The Washington DC rally is planned for the first anniversary of both Heyer’s death and the first rally.
Heyer’s mom, Susan Bro, said she was not shocked Kessler was not welcome in the Virginia town to hold his white rights rally.
“I am not surprised at him holding a rally away from Charlottesville, where he is not welcome,” Bro told WaPo. “It will be interesting to see how the citizens of D.C. and others respond to his rally.
