Fired ESPN Editor Who Wrote Jeremy Lin ‘Chink’ Headline Claims It Was An ‘Honest Mistake’

Former ESPN editor Anthony Federico, who was fired over a controversial Jeremy Lin headline that used the word “chink,” told the Daily News that the entire thing was a “honest mistake.”

“This had nothing to do with me being cute or punny,” Federico contended. “I’m so sorry that I offended people. I’m so sorry if I offended Jeremy.”

In firing Federico, an ESPN employee since 2006, the company wrote a mea culpa to the Asian-American community, assuring them they would be “better in the future”:

We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.

“ESPN did what they had to do,” Federico conceded and claimed that he used “chink in the armor” in a headline “at least 100 times” before fatefully using it last week.

“My faith is my life,” he said. “I’d love to tell Jeremy what happened and explain that this was an honest mistake. I had a career that I was proud of…I’m devastated that I caused a firestorm.”

Bullshit. BTW…..I hate apologies that include the qualifier “if.” They are usually disingenuous.

    ESPN is really going downhill.

  • Anonymous

I bet it is. Everyone makes a mistake of using offensive language in a role like that.

Have been for quite some time.  [See:  The Decision]

It’s just there to generate hype like cable news.

Not to mention he said he had used that headline “at least 100 times.”  At the very least then, he should have been fired for being unoriginal.

“I’m sorry that people were offended” is different (and we all know it) from “I’m sorry for offending people.” Someday those apologizing will realize that we like and trust them more when they use the latter.

I can see how it could be an innocent mistake if it’s a common phrase he uses to point out weaknesses in great athletes. Of course he should have realized the issue before going ahead with publication but it’s possible the connection just didn’t occur in his brain and in automaton mode he filed the story for publication. I question why there wasn’t someone else to edit and do a quick once over, who would have likely seen the problem? I also think being fired is a bit harsh; why not a suspension and public apology?

I think it is overboard. Maybe Lin should come forward and say that this person shouldn’t be fired.

  • Anonymous

Maybe Lin should work on not turning the ball over 7 times a game first.

In High School I once got the word “chink” in a game of Pictionary.  I drew a smiley face with slanted eyes and my partner’s first guess was “chink”.  True story.

The guy doesn’t think of Asians as “chinks”; he should be congratulated.

He should’ve said “chimichanga” instead. That’s perfectly fine.

Lin got back at him by peeing in his Coke.

“My faith is my life,”…….WTF…ABC -ESPN scapegoated this guy although he knew exactly what he was saying…but since youre in the firing mood ABC…..do something about George Will, stephen A smith and please STOP PUTTING LIZ CHENEY ON TV

Well that certainly puts a new slant on things

Tan, I agree with you and would like to add a little of my own.  When I was younger certain
things I was taught would not be taught today.  Let’s play monkey in the middle, smear the
queer, I’m sure the games still exist but by other names.  There was also “catch a n—– by
the toe”.  The term “a chink in the armor” was one I have used for years and I first heard it
from dear ole mom (nope, not a racist).  Now I see I have to be careful of saying that or it
might be misconstrued.  My question is this:  Which is worse?  The individual that says
it without malicious intent or the one that looks at it as wrong.  In order to view something
as offensive then don’t you in a way need to be thinking racially?  How many Chinese, Hispanic and Caucasian people belong to the NAACP?  Isn’t that racist?  Why do we say, “he’s a black (white) man.  Isn’t New York broken up into predominantly Italian, Irish, Jewish and Negro neighborhoods?  Isn’t that racist?  Our very own Government asks your race on
job applications.  I asked why once and was told for statistics.  Bull, for seperation of race.
Until we quit referring to ourselves as “African-American, Hispanic, Indian, Caucasian, etc.
We will be a country divided.  Oh yes, I have no idea what Max Bretos or Anthony Federico
were thinking when they were doing their jobs and only they know for sure.  I imagine it was
a lame excuse for a joke.  Suspension, no problem, but to lose your job over a mistake is
rediculous.  I would love to have been a fly on the wall of ESPN’s executive washroom to
hear what was said behind closed doors.

Paul, not his job.  His job is to do what he’s doing except maybe fewer turnovers.  It wouldn’t
matter anyway.  ESPN is now firing people for “intent”.  Oh yeah, and they get to decide what the intent was.  For Christ’s sake,  Murderers, rapists and child molesters get a second
    chance…..Dog killers too!

Anthony Federico should NOT have apologized for his remark. He obviously didn’t mean it as a racial slur as anyone with any brains at all would know. He had used this term for years. I mean, what sense would it make for him to make a racial slur on TV?, none. This is another result of our society becoming more and more politically correct because of liberals. If you believe Anthony Federico’s statement was racist, then you’re a complete moron. ESPN’s firing of Anthony Federico is weak and gutless. Screw ESPN and screw being politically correct.

He should not have apologized at all.
