Sen. Graham On Bin Laden: ‘This Idea Of Disposing The Body Within 24 Hours Because Of Tradition Bothers Me A Bit’
South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham (R) spoke to Fox News Radio’s “Kilmeade and Friends” this morning about the recent capture and death of Osama bin Laden – and, as it turns out, he has some pretty definite opinions about what the U.S. should have done with the terrorist leader’s body.
For one, Senator Graham thinks the U.S. definitely should release photographic evidence of bin Laden’s death – regardless of protocol stipulated by the Geneva Convention:
I know the Geneva Convention very well but this is a circumstance where I believe it’s not a violation of the convention, it would be in our national interests to make a case, documented case, that this was Osama bin Laden, he is dead. I think that would be a smart thing to do, and have it rolled out in a sensitive way, but prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, and some people still won’t believe it.
Graham also believes that burying (or “disposing”) the body within 24 hours in accordance with Islamic tradition may not have been the wisest move:
But this idea of disposing the body within 24 hours because of tradition bothers me a bit because we will be under attack as to whether or not it really was him. And I’m not so sure that was a wise move, I’d like to hear more about that. I think that may have been sensitivity taken too far.
