Rupert Murdoch Talks Tea Party, China, And Fox Business…On Fox Business

murdoch2 video

Fox Business loves to hear media moguls talk about Fox Business. Last week, they had CNN thinker-upper Ted Turner show up to talk about new Fox Business employee Lou Dobbs. Now they’ve invited their leader Rupert Murdoch to discuss the most pressing matters of the day—like how awesome Fox Business is. “Fox Business, Fox News” are News Corp.’s “best growth engines,” he said. “Seriously.”

DNC on Young Guns Ad: ‘Like The Movie, Policy Ideas Are Best Left In The ’80s

Young Guns exclusive

A new ad, promoting a book by GOP Reps Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy, has been eliciting some interesting reactions from fellow travelers. Former GOP Congressman and Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough torched the “Young Guns” on his show, re-dubbing them “The Young Turds,” and leading a veritable Friar’s roast of the ad by his panel.

We reached out to the Democratic National Committee to see if the Young Guns would fare any better with the opposition. The results might surprise you.

Roger Ebert Trashes 3-D Movies in Newsweek Article

Ebert_Avatar

The world’s most beloved film critic, Roger Ebert, is not a fan of the current 3-D trend. In an article in the current Newsweek, Ebert claims that 3-D movies are nothing but a trashy gimmick whose only real purpose is to steal extra money from audiences and this writer, at least, thinks he’s 100% right.

James Cameron: Glenn Beck Is “Dangerous,” Stephen Hawking “Right On The Money”

cameron_4-26 video

Avatar Director James Cameron played Hardball on MSNBC yesterday, and Chris Matthews delighted in exploring the environmental issues portrayed in the blockbuster movie.

But he also hit on another Cameron favorite – Glenn Beck. Oh, and Stephen Hawking and his ‘aliens will wipe us out’ theories.

James Cameron Calls Glenn Beck A “F*cking A**Hole”

Glenn+Beck+from+Tom+Degan's+Rant

Glenn Beck is not making many friends in high profile places these days. Yesterday Cokie Roberts was quoted calling him “worse than a clown. He’s more like a terrorist.” Today comes word that Avatar director James Cameron does not think terribly highly of the Fox News powerhouse, either. To put it mildly.

Michael Moore Would Have Had Avatar Win Over Hurt Locker

michaelmoore

Just because the Academy Awards happened two weeks ago doesn’t mean that it’s too late for Michael Moore to say his piece. Mainly, that Kathryn Bigelow‘s The Hurt Locker was a piece of crap because it was “lazy” and that James Cameron‘s Avatar was amazing because of its portrayal of how we “privatized war” and treated the planet.

James Cameron Turning Avatar Into a Novel

11112286

According to the Wall Street Journal, James Cameron confirmed Tuesday night that he, James Cameron, the highest-grossing film director of all time, will turn Avatar into a novel.

How interesting, considering that the best parts of the movie were its special effects.

Valentine’s Day Leads Lucrative Holiday Weekend Box Office

valentines-day-movie-poster

The four-day Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day double-feature weekend is shaping up to be a record breaking one at the box office. Yesterday, Valentine’s Day (the movie, not the holiday, which is tomorrow — yes, I know this is all very confusing) made about $15 million at the box office. If Valentine’s Day (the movie) becomes a popular date night activity on Valentine’s Day (the holiday), then there is quite a good chance the movie will earn up to $60 million over this four-day holiday weekend.

Panel Nerds: The Death and Life of Journalism Are Both Greatly Exaggerated

death_life_journalism

ohn Nichols and Robert McChesney, this was a book promotional event and an opportunity to outline their recommendations to save traditional journalism. It was a setup for a predictable night full of previews of what’s contained inside yet another “save journalism” solution book. Yet, thankfully, David Carr took a topic that has been spoken about to death and breathed new life into the discussion.

Some Big Surprises As 2010 Academy Award Nominations Are Announced!

oscar

It was another early morning in Hollywood today as Anne Hathaway helped announce the 2010 Academy Award nominations. This years Academy Awards are notable in that the Best Picture category has expanded to 10 nominees for the first time in over half a century. Click the link here for the full list of nominees, but here are my instant thoughts:

Golden Globes 2010: James Cameron Wins For Avatar, Loses For Hairdo

“Give it up for yourselves,” said James Cameron last night, accepting the Golden Globe for Best Picture for his giant blue 3D masterpiece, Avatar. He had already taken the Best Director nod — besting ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who he generously acknowledged in his speech, and causing a minor Twitter firestorm by actually speaking in his [...]

3D Is Played Out. Let’s Talk 4D.

3D is old news. Yeah, it’s coming to TV in real-time, and James Cameron seems to have an affinity for it.* Great. But the technology has been around forever. As in, since the 1890s. The classic image of people wearing 3D glasses at the movies is from the 1950s, after all – half a century [...]

ESPN Aims To Launch 3D Network, Blow Minds

Move over, humanoid Pandoran blue creatures – ESPN is getting into the 3-D game, launching the first all-3D sports channel starting with a World Cup match on June 11.

Smart Hollywood: Box Office Business is A-Boomin’

Did everyone go to the movies last weekend? Sure seems like it – the box office numbers were off the charts, with a three-day U.S. total of $278 million, shattering the previous record. Yes there was Avatar, pulling them in for the second weekend straight — in the business this is what we call a film that has “legs”, and Hollywood hasn’t seen legs this nice in a long long time — but for boffo B.0. like that, there needs to be more. And there was.

Avatar and the Art Of Buzz …NOW IN 3D!

Hollywood puts more cinematic gifts under your Christmas tree than at any other time of year (outside of the big summer movie season, but these are Oscar bait). But how does a movie-goer determine what is the must-see film to put at the top of the list? It’s all about the buzz — and the film to beat at the box office during the last days of 2009 is Avatar. I think perhaps you have heard of this movie.

The Mediaite Obligatory This Week’s Biggest Movie of All Time Post: Avatar Edition

If you haven’t seen Avatar, but have been tracking its coverage over the past year or so, you already know all you need to know about the film’s success. Actually seeing it is, at best, superfluous to understanding why this one never had any chance but doing anything but packin’ em in and stuffing ‘em with popcorn and soda.

Why Avatar Was Worth It: Tech Investment

This weekend, I did what the advertisements told me to and went to see Avatar in IMAX 3D. Truth be told, it was kind of a disappointment. The problem isn’t the uncanny valley — the alien Na’vi look real enough — but the roteness of it all. At that, it is a good thing for society that James Cameron made it. Why? Because the film poured so much money into technological innovation, and that innovation will carry over to movies and projects to come.

In Spite Of Press ‘Embargo,’ Avatar Reviews Start Rolling In

If you’ve followed any entertainment press in the past few weeks, you’ve been hit by the bright blue alien splatter that is Avatar‘s promotional campaign. Director James Cameron scored profiles in magazines like The New Yorker and Wired, while every nerdy and/or cynical blog either mocked the Jar Jar Binks-ness of it all or peed themselves in anticipation. Now, reviews of the film, which were supposed to be embargoed until December 18th in the U.S., are everywhere. Welcome to the internet!
