Joe Lieberman has always been a great pioneer for internet freedom. Last year, he suggested that the United States should implement an internet kill switch in the event of a cyberattack by taking its cues from China. Now Lieberman is calling for the world’s most popular search engine to censor material that could potentially be used to spread terrorist information.

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman sat down with Fox and Friends to talk about his opposition to President Obama‘s jobs bill. Lieberman said the the number one thing the country should be doing to get our economy going again is to deal with the debt. Gretchen Carlson was surprised by the his solutions. “Senator, you’re sounding like a Republican,” Carlson said. “No, I’m an Independent,” Lieberman countered. “But I think any Republican in the Senate would say exactly what you just said.” Carlson responded. “Well, as an independent, i guess i’ve got the freedom to say what i think.” Lieberman said.

Independent Senator Joe Lieberman appeared on Face The Nation and told Bob Schieffer that as a result of the horrible events in Japan, it is time to “put the brakes” on development of new nuclear power plants here in the United States. Lieberman wanted to assure Americans that FEMA and other federal agencies are much more prepared for such catastrophes than they were a few years ago, but expressed hesitation to expand a commitment to nuclear power before we learn what happens in Japan.

Before entering the world of politics, and later opinion television, Fox News weekend host Mike Huckabee served as Pastor at Baptist churches in his native Arkansas. As such, his rhetoric typically seems kinder and gentler towards his political foes than other right-of-center “conflictanators.” However, on his eponymous weekend show on Fox News, he found a perfect proxy to deliver anti-Obama vitriol, Chicago shock jock Mancow Muller.

Wikileaks’ Congressional opponents are recharging their batteries, and while Julian Assange has bigger legal fish to fry in Europe, he could soon be facing the consequences of breaking U.S. law by outing foreign intelligence sources. One of the senators behind the legal push, John Ensign, debated vocal Wikileaks ally Judge Andrew Napolitano on Freedom Watch on Friday, and while he made clear who he was protecting, he had a hard time defining “journalists”– and why Assange doesn’t count.

“What do you think of the Justice Department’s action, so far, not to charge Julian Assange with treason?” That’s the question Jenna Lee posed to Senator Joe Lieberman on Fox News today. And while Lieberman chose not to remind Lee that even SNL knows that Austrailian citizens aren’t typically found guilty of American treason, he did say, “I think it’s the most serious violation of the Espionage Act in our history.”

Since a politician won’t be elected unless she knows how to sell herself, it also helps to have a healthy amount of self-esteem. But some politicians take self-regard to a whole new level—and now, writer Darren Garnick has conducted a semi-scientific study that reveals which elected officials can rightfully be named the vainest of them all.

In an article dramatically titled “As the World Burns,” Ryan Lizza gives readers of The New Yorker a lengthy account of Washington’s inept handling of climate change issues. Lizza also paints an unflattering portrait of Sen. Lindsey Graham, revealing that the Republican tried to expedite a climate change bill “before Fox News got wind of the fact that this was serious process.”

Glenn Beck has landed the cover of the New York Times Magazine. If there is a greater measure of mainstream acceptance in the media I can’t think of what it is, other than perhaps a full hour on Oprah. Here’s the highlights.

Amongst the proposed Cordoba House’s purposes is to promote interfaith dialogue and to improve public understanding of Islam. I can forgive the ignorance of the crowd that is trying to stop the construction of the center. What I can’t forgive is the willfulness of the ignorance. The strange lack of interest in learning about Islam shows in every statement the band of loudmouth rabble-rousers make. Imagine if a group of Quakers tried to build a meeting house near a Muslim shrine. You could be sure that they’d be branded as Christian missionaries out to destroy Islam by many. The very same people that are now opposing the Cordoba House in New York would be yelping about the breathtaking ignorance of “The Muslims” and railing about such anti-Christian bigotry.

Last night Rachel Maddow ran down the list of ‘news’ that has been making the rounds about the Faisal Shahzad and pointed out that while everything may turn out to be true many of these items are “anonymously single-sourced.” Also, why is Lieberman trying to “wreak violence” on the constitution?

Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace had on Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) today, and discussed, among other things, the weapons reduction treaty struck earlier in the week between Russia and the United States (which still needs congressional and parliamentary approval by both nations.) Lieberman sounded bearish on the odds of the treaty (known as START II) passing, unless there were “major changes” to the treaty.

Governor Paterson’s favorite person in New York these days is probably Hiram Monserrate, the former New York State Senator whose political path has gone…awry. A few weeks ago, the Times’ J. David Goodman looked at Monserrate’s 2008 campaign website, which was still allowing comments. (The comments he was receiving were not particularly flattering.) In the piece, Goodman asked an interesting question: How many orphaned campaign sites litter the Internet? That, of course, was a challenge.

As Joe Lieberman‘s recent gambit on the health care bill shows, the senator from Connecticut is not afraid to take unpopular — though often effective — stands. Yesterday, on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Lieberman came to the defense of America’s detainment center at Guantanamo Bay, which he acknowledged had a “bad reputation,” but called a “humane” place. The Senate is debating Health Care reform this week, and tensions are running high. Passions are fueling a debate so spirited, that one might confuse the normally boring U.S. Senate for the far more entertaining British Parliament. CNN makes some news! CNN’s Dana Bash interviewed Senator Joe Lieberman last night for AC360 and when the topic of his political party affiliation came up, the former Democrat and current independent did not rule out a future campaign as a Republican. Lieberman told Bash that a move to the GOP remained a possible, though unlikely, option. “I don’t know what I’ll run as,” he said. “I like being an independent. So that’s definitely a possibility. But I’d say all options are open.”

Health Care reform is a story that often elicits blank stares and yawns from an audience. It not only lacks a clear and simple narrative, its hard to follow the characters involved. Or, you know, to discuss health care like the rest of the nation’s politicians and thinkers. “I don’t think anybody thinks this bill will pass as it is,” Lieberman told host David Gregory. Much of the day-after health care bill coverage has focused on the GOP Senators (and Joe Lieberman) who intend to stall the bill in the Senate unless the public option is removed. However yesterday on Meet the Press Rachel Maddow took the time to note how the Stupak amendment, which restricts funding for abortion unless it’s the result of rape or incest, might complicate things for President Obama going forward.

You’d be forgiven for concluding, after a weekend of celebratory headlines, that Congress’s passing of the Health Care bill on Saturday night was the final step in the long slog that saw many ups and downs this summer. Of course, you’d be wrong. Judging from some GOP reactions, it’s going to be a battle, to say the least.

When Joe Lieberman dramatically declared that he would support a GOP filibuster on the healthcare reform bill currently making its rounds in the Senate, he must have known that he’d be subjecting himself to serious criticism from some quarters. Last night, both Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow blasted Lieberman, portraying him as a pawn of the insurance industry and a traitor to his former party.

In a July interview with Playboy, Alec Baldwin was true to his actor ego and ambitiously revealed his desire to enter politics, singling out every lefty’s favorite turncoat Joe Lieberman as a potential opponent. “I have no use for him,” said Baldwin before admitting that “it’s all fantasy” because he wouldn’t ever be able to leave New York, as noted by Gossip Cop.
