CBS’ Bob Schieffer To David Axelrod On Obama: ‘Is This A One Term Presidency?’

Video

Bob Schieffer was enjoyably prickly today as he interviewed President Obama’s campaign advisor David Axelrod. After playing a clip of Obama from the beginning of his presidency telling Matt Lauer that three years later Americans will be able to determine whether he deserves a second term, Schieffer posed the question rather bluntly to Axelrod. “Is this going to be a one-term presidency?”

The question prompted this exchange, which seemed to leave Axelrod a bit shaken:

Axelord: “We are in a different place than we were the day he did that interview.”
Schieffer: “We are, things are worse than they were.”

And after Axelrod elaborated with a meandering answer, Schieffer interrupted his “extended response” and respectfully suggested he “stop talking about what the election is going to be about.” Instead Schieffer focused on what could be done now, and wondered whether he was wrong to think that nothing would get accomplished before the election. Axelrod politely informed him that yes, he was wrong, and that big things can still be accomplished. However, Schieffer’s visible skepticism and agitation with some of Axelrod’s long-winded responses suggest that Schieffer, like many Americans, may be eager for results.

Yes. 1/20/2013 cannot come soon enough.

Hey Barry……If you lose Bob Schieffer, you’re toast !!

  • Harry

Axelrod has his work cut out for him. This will be his greatest challenge as a political consultant in his long career. Defeating Hillary was quite a feat in 2008. Winning a national election in this terrible economic climate will require a stellar campaign performance by Obama and his team. I’ll tell you a juicy bit of irony is that the media strategist for John Sharp, the Democratic opponent in Rick Perry’s closest race for lieutenant governor in 1998 was none other than David Axelrod.

  • Re-Elect Obama 2012

Think Harry Reid.  There are no shortage of Sharon Angles running for president.

Good for you , Bob .
    Obama made it worse .
Think what the next president will ” inherit”.

Bob gets it wrong occasionally, though . He had predicted Benjamin Harrison would be reelected and missed that , of course.

  • BR

Well libs…………..there could be only ONE reason to ask a question like that.  Bob Schieffer is a racist!!!!!!!!!

It must be awful at this stage of Shieffer’s life and career to have such a crisis in faith. He has degraded himself  surrendering his integrity through his overreaching support of this administration. He’ll go out with a disgraced fizzle.

Wow….so CBS can actually go back in time and show us something Obama has said or done in the past…..?
    Who knew ?
Is this some sort of new science they discovered because I have never seen them do that before.
Maybe that old fart Schieffer can show us a clip of Obama saying that raising the debt ceiling was a sign of failure when he was a Senator.

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit
is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government
can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing
financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s
reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us
domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops
here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today
onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt
problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

  • realheadline

David should not be mad at Bob Schieffer, David’s problem is with his own incompetence and failed ideology. His five options to save our economy are listed below:

    1.raise taxes
    2.raise taxes
    3 raise taxes
    4 raise taxes
    5 raise taxes

Thanks for listing these for us David, some people may realize that the words “investments” and “revenue” are cute little Democratic euphemisms for raising taxes. You’ve put a lot of solutions on the table, now go ‘F’ yourself.

Obama is a scumbag who was elected because McCain’s not only a douche, but he ran a campaign that made Bob Dole look competent.

Check out the new boss. Same as the old boss.

Actually, Obama was a godsend. The libbies thought they had a mandate, and out from the shadows poured the commies for all to see. It ain’t pretty, and it’ll be at least another generation before this happens again. Sorry, libbies, you were _almost_ there, it must pain you to see your philosophies rejected, big time. Without Obama, there would be no Tea Party, and regular people would still be asleep while being driven over a cliff.

    Have you heard?
Obama want to decrease spending………………….in the tax code!
Come on people, do you not see the facts staring you in the face? George Orwell wrote about this administration. They make up words to decieve you.

Decrease spending in the tax code…………..raise taxes.
    Increase investments…………………………….raise taxes.
    Increase revenue………………………………….raise taxes.
    War………………………..military contingency operations.

This is called New Speak. They have a cadre of people that work in the Ministry of Truth. Have you not heard about the Office of Propaganda operated by Jesse Lee? They send out memos to journolistoes and talking heads at their affiliated propaganda bureaus like NBC and MSNBC. Remember a senator on a phone call instructing everyone to call the conservatives terrorists? It is a coordinated effort to lie and abrogate the truth.

    Wake up, it is 1984.

  • Johnjguy

It will be an interesting contest.

There is still a lot of ground, politically and economically to cover between now and then. Independent voters will be looking  for much more than flame throwing rhetoric.

I wonder who will get the GOP nomination and how satisfied Conservatives and the Tea Party will be with the eventual choice, let alone everyone else.

  • Wake up America

Do they actually know how stupid they sound?! The Tea Party is to fault!!! Tea party represents stoP spending, blow up the credit card, stop giving our money away to the Dem voters! Axelrod sounds desperate! How do we get the stupid 56 % voters that elected Obama to fall for ” The Tea Party downgrade” talking point! Yikes! Can it work?! Help! Sinking ship!. Only hope, is to change the message! The Tea Party did it! Axcelrod to Obama ” can you dance? Start dancing because the ” brilliant act”. Isn’t working anymore! Dance Obama, dance!!!

  • http://twitter.com/DiamondDNice DiamondDNice

but they got downgraded because republicans wouldn’t accept any tax cuts. That was specifically identified by the S&P. Also the unwillingness to compromised was pointed out as a problem with the way politics works in this country. Many believe the dems tried to compromise and the republicans refused so i think the downgrade hurts everyone but looks particularly bad for republicans because they were in favor of less cuts and no taxes and the s&p specifically said they needed more cuts and to raise taxes.

Still not seeing anyone put forth who’s going to actually beat him. I always get, “anybody.” Well….that doesn’t really answer the question. Remember, our last President got two terms and we all just LOVED that guy, right? What will some of you hardcore types do if Obama does?

One thing that’s safe to say is this is shaping up to be the dumbest, nastiest election we’ve ever seen. One last hurrah before we fall off the cliff, blaming each other all the way down.

  • http://twitter.com/DiamondDNice DiamondDNice

He’s not a one term because he’s the lesser of two evils. Nobody wants what the tea party or the republicans suggest which is to do nothing and give tax breaks to the rich. That doesn’t solve any problems. Even the S&P said that’s not aggressive enough. But when it’s Mitt Romney or the nuts like Bachman and Palin on the other side regular Americans aren’t going with those crazies. They have no interest in the poor or the middle class just the super rich.

  • Anonymous

Obama is the most cynical President in American history. He thinks it’s all a show. He thinks all Americans are stupid, with a two week long attention span, that he can easily manipulate with fancy words and speeches. He’s nothing but a smooth talking, BS-ing hustler.

Why in the world would you want Obama reelected?  Everything he does goes towards destroying America.  Please, don’t blindly follow him just because he has that D behind his name.

  • Anonymous

Obama’s biggest achievement has been spending borrowed money faster than any many in history.  And what has he to show for it?

Unemployment has increased since he took office.

The nation’s debt has been downgraded.

The amount of debt has increased enormously.

    The war fronts have expanded.

The regulatory burden on businesses has increased enormously.

The stimulus bill was a failure.

The health care bill is intensely unpopular, and has pushed up health insurance premiums enormously (in sharp contrast to what the President promised).

Gas prices have doubled since Obama took office.

    The dollar has fallen.

Businesses are afraid to expand and hire.

I know that the liberal media has tried to hide this disastrous track record.  But how can you hide an elephant of this size?

And the media will try to tell you that Obama can get re-elected.  But this is about as plausible as their “recovery summer” news stories from a year ago.  Mark my words, Obama — like Jimmy Carter before him — will be gone after one term.  And it will take the Democrats a decade to recover from the mess they’ve created.  Even if they mean well – and I’m sure they do – voters can see that they lack the competence necessary to run the nation.

  • Anonymous

I predict the Democrats will run the most negative attack campaign in history.  The entire Left is now operating from the “rules for radicals” playbook – which is premised on avoiding dialogue and debate, and relying instead on ridicule, name-calling and character attacks.  True, the President will need surrogates, but he has plenty of them in place…at MSNBC, CNN, CBS, the New York Times, NPR, etc.

Honestly, even if the Democrats wanted to run a positive campaign, they can’t.  The President has no achievements to run on.  What do we have to show for all this debt he has pile up?  A Nobel Prize?   Make me laugh!

REPUBLICANS wouldn’t accept tax cuts??? In what universe to do you live?  TeaPartiers, rightists to teh right of Repubs, wanted TEN TRILLION.  The current resolution only passed the Dem controlled senate because there was only $2.4T in cuts, and only less that $1T immediately..  This current compromise would have had zero chance of passing the left if it contained anything like a balanced budget resolution (just ask Boehner).  It ain’t teh republicans that caused this – they only brought the problem to the very forefront of the public perception.  Hate it but we ought to be thanking them for forcing the govt’s hand in controllling our future’s viability..

Let me also clarify that in my opinion, it is both the republicans and the democrats that have dug this hole we’re in.  We’ve had something like 10 of the last 50 years where there were a budget surplus.. and the surpluses of all those years are dwarfed by teh sum total deficits we’ve accumulated. There is no way to EVER correct our path unless we combine both slashing spending and hiking taxes.  Fifty percent of American pay no taxes. That cannot stand.  They have no financial stake in our nation, and as such have only selfish concerns as it pertains to expenditures.  Plus, increasing taxes upon those that make more have to be part of the solution.   It reduces income tax reciepts to the govt, and it tend to push individuals and companies out of the States, but they are needed in the short term to correct our trajectory

That’s a lie. Boehner was prepared to accept $800 billion in “new revenue” before Obama reneged on the deal and demanded $1.2 trillion. Regardless, the reason for the downgrade is that this so-called compromise on the debt ceiling was a joke. It’s still going to add $7 trillion in debt over the next decade and we’re already $14.5 trillion in the hole. How could they NOT downgrade us with numbers like that?

You got that backwards, the Republicans wanted more cuts and less spending. Obama wanted a blank check. The fact that you’re falling for the spin and not taking into account that two and a half years Obama has managed to destroy this nation is where our biggest problem lies. Obama will I hope someday leave office, but your falling for smoke and mirrors won’t. Someone else will get you to believe their smoke and mirrors. You’re America’s problem.

  • John Higgins1990

Schieffe is part of the problem, along with the rest of the sycophants who helped put an empty suit in the White House.  Seriously, as low as my opinion is for politicians, it is much lower for journalists and pundits.

This is not about a presidency, nor a president -for in this destruction of our economy, he did not act alone. It is about the failure of liberalism, and to be fair, compassionalte conservativism. The government is not morally, nor financially, the resort of first hope, which is the bible of the left, and the guilt of the “bi-partisan at any cost” right. The moral principle of subsidiarity which free men must follow, witholds the power of the higher in deference to the rights and responsiblity of the less powerful members of a societal class.

Our government needs to back off and let, encourage, and in the case of parisitical (or victim class) none-productiveness, force, people to care for themselves. It is only on those things which are not do-able by free peoples, that the government has any moral right to interfere in the goings and comings of a free society. The common good, does not allow for the government to decide and control what the meaning of such is. The people do (the 10th amendment)

Nor may govenment take over a free society through the interpretation of law (Row v Wade anyone)
All law must not interfere (regardless of good intentions) with the proper function of a free society. The family is the core unit of society and the govenment must support, not undermine, that unit. God may not be removed from the public life of a free people -that is not what our consittution says -when the government courts say it does -they, not God, must be removed..
When government, as has ours, decays into a de facto nanny state with the actual practice of totalitarian impulses driving it -as does our, it needs to be removed.

    “Think Harry Reid.”

So, let me get this straight:

You are counting on the GOP nominating a loser so that Obama can win?

Didn’t you try that in 1980, and it bit you liberals on the ass? Care to try again?

Polls are showing that nearly all of them beat Barry Downgrade One-Term.

Herman Cain (Herman Cain!) loses by 5 points, NOW.

One-Term should do an LBJ March 1968 speech (“I will not accept another term as your President”) right now, to give his party time to find someone to sacrifice. Joe “Foot-in-Mouth” Biden comes to mind. He’s good for a 45-state loss to the GOP.

    Go back to sleep, whydoncha?

DiamondDNice you are why there should be a voter apptitude test.  The House Republicans passed Cut Cap and Balance, it contained the $4 trillion in cuts the S&P said they required.  The House Republicans met with the S&P prior to passing the bill.  BO, Reid et. al tabled the bill and wouldn’t even discuss it.  Nancy was all over the news screaming about how they are trying to save the world from those mean cutting Republicans. The House Republicans also passed a repeal of BOcare that’s a $1.4 trillion in cuts and a budget, Dems did nothing and wouldn’t vote on any of it.  Let me give you a clue, Rachel Maddow is not going to give you anything that comes close to a fact.

Hey you lib losers remember me telling you this? “Raising the debt ceiling or taxes or both will not help the problem! Moody’s and the S&P have rejected that idea. They have said the only thing that will stop a downgrading of America’s credit rating is a sustainable budget! Since Obama and his Dems have said they refuse to pass one America’s credit rating will go down on their watch. I guess they care more about their ideology than America or keeping their jobs come 2012.”? Time to start listening to your betters!

I just LOVE it when Liberals try to defend the indefensible–it’s just laughable.  And when they get backed into a corner, out come the smears:  “You don’t understand because you’re not intelligent enough”.  “You disagree with the President because you’re a racist”.  “Obama is so smart, no one can keep up with him”.  Liberals are just PATHETIC!  And to all my Liberal friends who voted for Obama, “I TOLD YOU SO”!

  • Col Attilla

Whether you liked GWB or not, unemployment during his tenure was around 5%, now it’s over 9% and has been since Obama took office.  We were in one war then, not four like we have now.  Inflation was much less, gasoline prices half of what they are today.  More people are on Food Stamps now than since the program started, more housing forclosures than since the 1930s.  Now, thanks to Obama, for the first time in it’s proud history, the USA has had it’s debt rating downgraded.  So are you happier now than you were in 2008?  I doubt it.

Carter stated that when he was president, he worked hand in hand with the Mid-East Anti American Coalition to obtain the tittle and was assured by  Mid-East Anti American Coalition that the “WORST U.S. PRESIDENT EVER”  title would be his for at least the next 100 years.

The color of his skin has nothing to do with anything. I am only sorry that he has been such a colossal failure because I had truly hoped that if he was successful we, as a country, could get past racism. He has done nothing but exacerbated the problem with his own racism and his failures become the failure of the black man. Sad.

Outlaw the T-Party, send their Reps to Gitmo
Since the T-Party has no problem taking down the US economy along with the world economy it is time to see the danger to America in these actions.  By Executive order and Homeland Security outlaw actions leading to taking the economy hostage, arrest Reps in Congress for their actions, outlaw proponents of T-Party.

Evidently it’s not just Barry who still is under the illusion (or at least is willing to claim) that politicians on opposite sides can “come together”–as if there were such thing as a Kumbaya caucus in Washington.

In this interview, David Axelrod, a pivotal White House henchman, spewed (more like mumbled and stumbled) the same counterintuitive collaboration mantra that BHO has repeated from his inaugural speech all the way to during the debt “negotiations” (more like capitulations).  If somebody in the Obama administration doesn’t realize (after years of opportunity to figure it out) that doing deals in DC does not work the same way as community organizing, then the steamrolling over the moderate (not just progressive) agenda will continue.

To be more effective–heck, to be efffective at all, for starters–Axelrod and Obama and everyone in their camp in between need to start digging in their heels, quit dancing around tinkering with tax reform (hardly a solution to reduce the deficit or raise revenue) and make a strong stand for real change.  Taxes are at a 50-year low, and if the existing legislators on the Hill aren’t willing to moderately raise taxes back to historical levels (starting with the rich and the protected corporations), then the Obama administration need to tell the American people to vote the obstructionists out.  The problem with this plan is that not only has Obama been spineless on principle, he’s scared to offend Wall Street, corporate America, and even the Right.

Maybe it’s we, the American people, who need to be more vocal and aggressive toward such Barackian wimpishness, muted progressivism, and damaging radical-right starvation of the government, at the expense of appropriate regulation, proven social programs, and other valuable government initiatives that are far and away from claims of waste that the mostly vitriolic conservatives incessantly unleash.

Destroying America, Sandy?  What group was willing to throw this country under the bus in the debt crisis–and stonewalled any balanced approach but GDP-decimating cuts, sparing the rich and corporations (but not graduate students) from shared sacrifice?  Oh yeah–the (radical) right.

If preferring to cut social security (which has been paid for by decades with a specific tax) or medicare (which a majority of surveyed Americans recently said that they wanted to have untouched) is not what you consider destroying America, then we have a different view of what destruction is, Sandy.

  • Anonymous

Um, Gideon, the rich and corporations have had five years to use their tax cuts to hire. Instead, they stockpiled the largest cash reserves ever and further expanded the wealth disparity.  The honeymoon is over. It’s time to take away the loopholes.  The Bush tax cuts have already cost this country a trillion dollars, give or take half a trillion.

  • Anonymous

PattiSue, the Senate didn’t want to debate it because it was not

Barack Obama’s plan had about 1/4 revenue enhancements (not even any statutory tax hikes) and 3/4 cuts, and — to use you’re words, Bo(eh)ner “wouldn’t even discuss it.”

The deal that they ended up agreeing to is projected to cost up to 1.8 million jobs, and if it that wasn’t the doing of the Republicans, then you’re either disingenuous or delusional.  The progressives and Obama both had plans that did not require such Draconian, GDP-slashing, job-crippling cuts.  Given that the rich and corporations are hoarding profits instead of investing them (in jobs or otherwise), then raising taxes would boost economic activity by putting money to work that would otherwise be on the sidelines.  ”Trickle-down economics” works only (if ever) when capacity is scarce.  That’s not the case today.

  • Anonymous

Adam, this rumored last-minute demand of an extra $400 million is no excuse for Bo(eh)ner to reject the first $800 million.  Given that Boehner went back on his word (at 2x the size) then I guess he reneged, too.  You expect us to believe that crap?  And what are you talking about “so-called compromise”?  This was never anywhere near 50% revenue, 50% cuts.  It was compromised in favor of conservatives from Day 1.

I support a balanced-budget amendment, but only with no arbitrary maximum percentages of how much government can spend. By definition, a balanced-budget amendment has its own check and balance–that any increase in expenditure must be matched with an increase in taxation, which would make legislators pause.  The radical right was clearly what the S&P was talking about with their downgrade; the progressives attempted to negotiate in good faith.

  • Anonymous

Why a discussion of tax cuts?  They have already been the cause of a large percentage of the $14 trillion debt anyway.  U.S. taxes are already among the lowest in the world (currently less than 20% of the GDP federally, plus another <10% for state).

  • Anonymous

I looked up “Santorum” online, and I don’t consider him someone to “choose” from.

And Romney & Huntsman aren’t really separate choices–and are so full of drawbacks that they aren’t electable.

And Michelle Bachmann is not a serious candidate.

Until Rick Perry enters the campaign, Democrats have one more viable choice than Republicans.

  • Anonymous

The Democrats said no to balancing the budget with an arbitrary maximum percentage cap on it.  I would support a balanced budget amendment that is truly balanced.

  • Anonymous

“The “rich vs poor” thing won’t work on real people, only government recipients and employees. The rest of the country that actually works for a living knows better.” … except for those millions of Americans who have honestly tried to work for a living but have not been able to find jobs or have been crippled by health (or health costs) or other tragedy and have been unsuccessful in doing so.  (As for any freeloaders, I will stand with anyone who cuts their handouts, but not at the expense of those who really need it.)

Gee, Tim, at least try to appear less out of touch.

  • Anonymous

DDN, unfortunately I agree with you.  Obama is the lesser of two evils because he has not shown to stand up for progressive principles.  Still less dangerous than a Bachmann or a Perry–and maybe Obama can be “influenced” back to what he actually pledged in his the first months of his presidency.
