Erica Hill Leaving CNN (And Anderson Cooper!) for CBS

Aw. What a sweet segment this is, breaking news and hearts: CNN’s Erica Hill, Anderson Cooper‘s 360 sidekick and sassy onscreen better-half, is leaving to go to CBS full-time (she’s currently co-host of the CBS Early Show on Saturdays). Cooper announced it on tonight’s show “with a heavy heart” and then took a light romp down memory lane through their years together (well, almost two of them, since she joined Cooper in Feb. 2008). As he introduced the montage – including a hairstyle on Hill that can best be described as a cross between a wet Kate Gosselin and a mullet – Cooper said, “I cannot imagine doing this program without Erica Hill and I cannot really express how much I’m going to miss you.” Aw. Hill, for her part, got all teary. Watch below.

p.s. “Erica Hill Husband” is trending on Google. Yes, she’s married. His name is David Yount and they’re expecting their second child. And I imagine that no, he’s not jealous of Anderson Cooper.

Lets just be honest, Erica Hill barely did anything on 360 so her leaving is not going to change 360 much at all. The little that she did Randi Kaye filled in and did better and also did reports to boot. Erica could barely manage the Bulletins.

And just for the record Anderson gushes over everyone that leaves. He said the exact same thing about the last person who left 360. His fake gushing over Erica was nothing new. He’s more into Kelly Ripa anyway. As Erica is aware of and obviously jealous of also.

I wish her luck but she better be prepared to do way more than she ever did on 360. That was a cush job.

Not surprised. She sorta deserved to be on more than she was on camera, imho. Her own show, at least.

Wow, she can’t stay in place for very long.

I remember watching her on TechTV. I still remember the day she announced that she was leaving for Headline News. She got out long before G4 swooped in and destroyed TechTV.

    Good luck, Erica.

Knowledge_Is_Power, what are you talking about? Erica did a lot on 360 and for CNN in general (e.g. CNN Tonight), and that’s clear to anyone who’s actually tuned in to the network on a regular basis. Randi Kaye only “filled in” when Erica herself had the night off, and yes, Erica did many reports for 360 as well. She “could barely manage the Bulletins”? I don’t know what that even means. She delivered them clearly and accurately; what more could you ask for? Not to mention that she filled in for Anderson, the *primary* anchor, on a regular basis when he was off and she did well when discussing various topical issues with guests (how many times did Randi Kaye do THAT?) So for her to essentially carry the program as a substitute anchor many times for Anderson speaks to her talents as a news anchor and the trust that the staff had in her. Lastly, she interacted with viewers regularly on the 360 blog and just generally injected a positive, passionate energy into the program that I will sincerely miss and I doubt anyone else will be able to match. She will do very well at CBS full-time (as she already does on Saturday’s Early Show) and I wish her and her family the very best.

And I don’t understand why someone would undermine Anderson’s sincerity about Erica. The Kelly Ripa comparison is way off (a serious news program versus a morning talk show), and Erica’s comment about Kelly was just one of her typical funny quips.

shylight has a point, it seems everytime I would check in with 360. Cooper was off & Erica was running the show.
If anything this should make things a little easier, she only has to commute to CBS. It’s a good move, CNN is in a ‘death spiral’ ratings wise these days.

ShyLight – that was a very accurate, thoughtful post you put together.

You should know that Knolwedge_is_power (and “librablue”) are HUGE HATERS of *ANYTHING* related to Anderson Cooper (and CNN, although their venom is mostly for Cooper). You should check out his extensive posting history over at TVNewser for proof.

    @ Shy light

Actually if you paid the least bit of attention to CNN then you would have seen that Erica’s so called “reports” that she did were actually run all day long on CNN and done by SOMEONE ELSE. They just took off that person’s voice and did a voice over with Erica’s. That is her extent of reporting. That was done many, many, many times! She never left the studio but maybe once or twice at best. Her subbing was sub par and when people saw her on they turned the channel. You can go all around the net and see people saying that. Even sites dedicated to the show would rarely mention her and when she subbed this last time they barely even posted about it yet posted other stuff about Anderson and not her “work” on 360.

As far as subbing goes she very rarely did it! When Anderson was off they would always bring in John King or even Wolf 99% of the time even though she was sitting right there doing nothing. The last few times Anderson was off were on holidays and all of the other top anchors were off too and the lowly subs were made to work on the holidays and that’s the only reason she subbed.

But yeah, she is OH SO GREAT! Where was all of this sucking up when she was on 360? Where was all of these people at when she subbed and got pitiful numbers, where? At least I can be honest about it can you?

“And just for the record Anderson gushes over everyone that leaves. He said the exact same thing about the last person who left 360. His fake gushing over Erica was nothing new. He’s more into Kelly Ripa anyway. As Erica is aware of and obviously jealous of also.”

Good God in Christ, some people need to make it significantly less obvious that they write fanfiction. And that they occasionally lose their grasp on the fact that it’s fiction. Wow.

Anyway, Ms. Sklar–Ms. Hill did indeed join 360 two years ago but I think it’s worth noting that she had been providing news bulletins and various other segments for Anderson Cooper’s show since early 2005, so their onscreen chemistry and professional relationship has been around for more than four years. I’m so thrilled that Erica Hill is getting this opportunity but as a loyal 360 viewer I’m profoundly sad to see her go.

Erica Hill filled in for Anderson Cooper quite a bit over the last two years (when the hell did Wolf Blitzer ever fill in? Maybe once?) and she did an excellent job. I remember being so impressed by how well she handled the breaking news during the Mumbai attacks when Mr. Cooper was off for Thanksgiving last year. She had terrific segments toward the end of this year in which she interviewed Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem. I also remember her reporting from the Gulf Coast during Katrina and she was stellar, and I have read that her anchoring of the breaking news during 9/11 was outstanding although I didn’t see it. She also filed several reports that were unique to 360 and were not simply someone else’s work with Erica Hill’s voiceover, although CNN pulls that trick with everybody. They’ve done it to Soledad O’Brien, too.

The addition of a former tech reporter to 360 was a very smart move by CNN, as her contributions through the webcast and the blog really made the show stand out. Her onscreen chemistry with Mr. Cooper was wonderful and she is such a sharp wit with a great personality for television. I also enjoy her very much on “The Early Show Saturday.” She is indeed a rare talent as Mr. Cooper said last night and I look forward to following her to CBS–I’m glad that as m pointed out above, CBS clearly saw that Erica Hill deserved more than what CNN was offering to her.

Unless, of course, she decides to throw it all away by killing Kelly Ripa with a carving knife in a jealous rage, due to the endless battle for Anderson Cooper’s affections! I guess we’ll all have to wait and see. ;)

Oh, since the clip cuts off, a little background for the Kelly Ripa thing–AC and EH were chatting at the very end of the show about how they’re going to navigate their friendship now that they no longer work together, saying they have to come up with topics to discuss over lunch and such–and in an attempt to end on a light note (and probably to avoid tearing up again) she jokingly told him that he’s not “allowed” to like Kelly Ripa more than he likes her. It was cute and funny and no one in their right mind would have taken her seriously.

  • libra blue

I have watched AC360 from the very beginning and, except for a couple of occasions, I have always enjoyed Erica’s input on the show, so I was very saddened to hear that she has decided to leave 360. Although I think that she and Anderson hit is off immediately, the chemistry between them that developed over the years was special and I doubt it will be replicated.

I wish her the best of luck in her new job and with her new baby. AC360 will never be the same without her.

  • ShyLight

    To personwhomakescomments:

Yeah, I just realized Knowledge_is_Power is an AC360 hater. I saw him on TVNewser last night and he basically copied and pasted his first initial paragraph from here into an overwhelming sea of positive comments. He stood out like a sore thumb, and who knows what other websites are out there where he dishes out the same vitriol.

    And to Knowledge_Is_Power:

I actually do pay attention to CNN. The network runs constantly on my TV when I am home especially during weekends, the summer, and holidays from American Morning all the way through AC360. I’m a huge news junkie and a loyal CNN viewer, so combine that with my view of the general dumbing down of American television over the last decade and I don’t really watch anything else.

I disagree with your flawed assessment of her reporting, as I recall many times when there were segments where she was actually out in the field, or at the very least it was obvious when Anderson brought her in for an on-screen segment for a story that she had to do some degree of research, make calls, and talk to people based on her own language. Furthermore, she filled in for Anderson throughout her entire time at 360, more than simply your cherrypicked example of the 2009 holiday season that you pulled from recent memory. For you to say she sat “right there doing nothing” when others filled in is both ridiculous and disingenuous – she was, at the very least, needed for the bulletins and contributions for stories.

I couldn’t disagree more about her subbing. As has been said, she held her own and was very thoughtful when she interacted with guests discussing the various issues of the day like the Brazilian boy custody case and the healthcare debate. She was the primary anchor during several political segments that were of particular interest to me as she interviewed standard contributors like David Gergan, and in several cases I was very impressed with her during certain political segments in terms of her questioning, follow-ups, and the degree to which she pressed interviewees. Thus, just because some people on a few Internet forums are cut from the same mold as you when it comes to undue AC360 criticism doesn’t mean that a whole host of other people who actually enjoyed the program when Erica subbed and demonstrated a strong on-screen presence in general should be ignored. It’s my understanding that, sadly, 360′s numbers IN GENERAL went down in 2009, so for you to go “Oh! Oh! The numbers were down for 360 [as they have been all year], Erica subbed, so it must have been her fault!!!!111″ is asine at best. Correlation doesn’t equal causation. Probably the most important point out of any of this is that, quite frankly, you and others really have no idea what was going on behind the scenes at CNN, what all of her responsibilities and assignments entailed, and how they relate to what materializes on the program, so fundamentally what you’re doing is speaking out of ignorance.

And for the record: I’m not sucking up. I’ve always kept my liking of the program to myself, and this is the very first time I’ve ever come on the Internet to discuss AC360 in any manner, but I felt I needed to defend Erica against one of her detractors. I’ve always enjoyed Erica’s presence on 360, her contributions to the program and to CNN, and her enthusiasm. I AM being honest. The REAL question is are you willing to put aside your blind hatred for a second, stop trying to mischaracterize Erica as someone who just showed up for a paycheck, and actually give her at least some degree of credit for working her way to the top with her dedication, talent as a news reporter, and her contributions to CNN.

    Knowledge_Is_Power –

I’m sure CBS News, one of the most elite news networks in the U.S., had their pick of anchors. And I know that CBS wouldn’t just hire someone who doesn’t do their own reporting or has no skills in journalism. Over the years, she has continuously been given promotions from magazines to TechTV, HLN, CNN and to CBS. You don’t get those kind of jobs if you aren’t qualified and skilled. You were right that her leaving the show will not change it too much, but I always enjoyed Erica Hill on AC360.
