Flashback: Chris Matthews Tells Glenn Beck He’s “A Great Guy”

video

Every time I put up a post in which Chris Matthews mentions Glenn Beck, or mentions Beck in a way that might lead people to believe he’s just discovered him, or mentions Beck in a way that might lead people to believe he (Beck) is not in fact human, someone emails in a link to this 2003 interview during which Matthews seems to be getting along just fine with Glenn (“this guy’s a great guy…I listen to him coming to work every night”). Perhaps not quite tingle-up-his-leg fine, but fine nonetheless.

So because it’s Sunday and because it’s my last official day here at Mediaite, I thought it’d be a good time for a flashback post. Behold: Glenn Beck and Chris Matthews, the early years. On a related side note, it’s always interesting to watch old Beck appearances and realize how little his views have changed over the years, and how warmly those views were embraced by MSM types prior to his having a hit Fox News shows. Watch below.

Back then, Matthews was a conservative and Glenn was a conservative. Today Matthews is a centrist and Glenn is off the scale.

Great observation that Glenn Beck has not changed, but rather it is Chris Matthews who changed.

I’ve enjoyed reading your articles; you are always fair. Good look and I wish you the best.

You picked a good one for your final column !! Just very sorry to see you go Glynnis. Best wishes in your new endeavor. Hope your older columns hang around for a long time on Mediaite. Let us know where to find you.

Funny how Glenn hasn’t changed, but MSNBC’s treatment of him has. Now what’s changed since this interview??? Hmmmmmmm…. It’s a thinker.

You are delusional and stretching the truth, you can see by the video that Glenn Beck has kept his same principles, but Matthews hasn’t.

It is funny to see Matthews saying how much he loves Glenn Beck and LISTENS TO HIM ALL THE TIME ON THE RADIO. Yet just this week during the election Matthews said he doesn’t consider Beck even human…lol, talk about a hypocrite.
Beck is saying the same things he has been saying on his show…it is Matthews who changed. This proves that back then Matthews agreed with Beck.

Well Glynnis, good luck on your new endeavors.

uh…you fraud. He is saying the same thing he has been saying all summer. I believe this was also the main focus of his rally to restore honor.

Glynnis, Thank you for writing something on your last day that I can applaud you for! I knew you had it in you!

Chis Matthews paraboid liberal who needs thinks Conservatives are rethreads from the Confederacy. Glenn Beck is a Constituionalist who has libertarian leanings. In other words, Chris Matthews is cluelss.

  • Kitsune

It’s bizarre seeing Glenn on MSNBC.

I love this quote from him, though. “People don’t change when things are great. People change when things bottom out.”

It may be the most true thing that anybody has ever said.

That reminds me of something Matthews said a while back. Apparently, on MSNBC, the debate is “left vs. center-left.” LOL.

Of course, we had that post the other day about how Fox News was more balanced covering the election than MSNBC:

Ronald Reagan wouldn’t be able to be a member of the Tea Party today because he’d be too liberal. The right wing in this America have been going off the rails and you know it. If you took a conservative today and traveled back in time, they’d be considered extremist. Hell, if you took a conservative today and went back to World War 2 they’d be executed for conspiring with the fascists.

I don’t think you understand how damn far to the right the current iteration of conservatives are in America. Just travel elsewhere in the world to other democracies and compare yourself. Under our current political system, 90% of European Parliament would be considered members of the Democratic party while the rest 10% of the right wingers would be Republicans.

Chris Matthews is a conservative Democrat. Rachel Maddow has publicly said that he’s quite right-wing.

You’re insane. I USED TO BE A DEMOCRAT.

JFK, Robert Kennedy, LBJ would not recognize today’s Democratic party. Today’s Democratic Party is extremely socialist and extreme. Today’s Democrats are those who were rioting outside of Chicago during the Democratic convention decades ago.

The extremists are on the Left. I used to be Democrat and I can tell you that many Democrats left the Democratic party because the Party has been taking over by socialists and the terrorists of the 60s.

..and that is why the Democrats LOST big this past election because they are now run by extremists and radicals.

  • Latin2

The old Democratic Party was sided with Israel.

The old Democratic Party fought against Socialism and Communism.

The old Democratic Party was pro-military and national defense.

The old Democratic Party shunned radicals and the kooks on the far left.

The old Democratic Party was very patriotic.

Today’s Democratic Party is none of that anymore.

  • Latin2

In fact Glenn Beck’s OWN FAMILY WERE DEMOCRATS from the Mid West.

Today’s Democratic Party has become a Socialist, radical party.

  • Latin2

    JFK was Conservative;

    http://www.conservapedia.com/John_F._Kennedy#Was_Kennedy_a_liberal_or_a_conservative.3F

“JFK’s campaign manager and chief confidante was his brother Bobby, a devout Catholic who was in close touch with the Catholic establishment as well as the local machines. JFK thus maintained very close ties to the Catholic establishment; he carefully followed the required public rituals such as Mass on Sunday and no meat on Friday. It was a major achievement by Kennedy in 1960 to resolve the religious issue and bring Catholics into the mainstream of American life and to the top ranks of national leadership.[9]

On foreign policy he was a leading anti-Communist hawk; he won in 1960 by attacking Eisenhower’s foreign policies as not aggressive enough. When elected he sent forces to invade Cuba and rollback Communism; he increased the military presence in Vietnam by a factor of 16 and unleashed the CIA to undermine Communism in the South; he sent the Navy to a direct confrontation with the Soviets in the Cuban Missile Crisis, forcing the Soviets to withdraw. Liberals have misread these episodes–saying that the Cuban invasion was really Eisenhower’s idea; that in Vietnam he might have changed his mind in a second term; and that in Cuba he was liberal because he did not blow the world up.

On the liberal side, he achieved the creation of the Peace Corps. To combat Communism in Latin America he proposed a liberal program of financial and technical assistance and free-food programs, and indicated he would take a sympathetic view of revolutionary movements that have the legitimate objective of bettering the life of the hemisphere’s poor and downtrodden. Kennedy explicitly exempted any such movements dominated by “external”—meaning Communist—forces, thereby shutting the door on renewed diplomatic relations with Fidel Castro’s Cuba

On domestic issues, as president he tried to cut taxes and blocked his liberal advisors who wanted deficit spending in 1961. Civil rights did not interest him and he put it on the back burner. He was no more active than Eisenhower in that regard. On unions, he built up a reputation of strong opposition to union corruption, especially in the Teamsters; he quietly kept on good terms with George Meany, the AFL-CIO leader, while avoiding Walter Reuther, the leader of the liberal wing of the AFL-CIO.

Kennedy had a pro-business reputation and sponsored policies such as tax cuts and low inflation that conservative businessmen wanted. On taking office he called for a “full-fledged alliance” with business. He did get into a brush-up with the steel industry when the steelmen broke their promise to him to keep prices down; that move made Kennedy more popular among the anti-business liberals, but Kennedy never proposed major legislation that business opposed. He named Douglas Dillon, a leading Republican businessman, as his Secretary of the Treasury. On dealing with unemployment, he never proposed New-Dealish programs but instead had a package that was acceptable to conservative Republicans.[10] “

Is this comment directed at me, or Glynnis – because it’s her quote. Is she a blind partisan idiot?

being a (former) supporter of Hillary Clinton, supporter of gay marriage, and pro-choice makes me a blind partisan idiot of what party, exactly?

Dude, you need to realize that, not surprisingly, someone is trying to undermine my cred and steal my ID (including my pic which should be criminal).

“writer” picked up on the extra S.

This happened on the same story board where I was trying to think about how to address the same, sleazy tactic used my someone on the left, nutsofast. As insulting, crude and Limbaughesque as notsofast is, there is no point in using his fake picture and modified name to undermine him. It is dumb, sleazy, unjustifiable and underhanded to do this to anyone on the left or the right.

That includes GlennBeckReviews who is making assertions that provably false. What GlennBeckReviews and nutsofast are doing may be perfectly legal, which I doubt; but it’s not ethical in the least. You must cease and desist using my photograph or face legal reprisal (if I have any).

Beck is not part of a satanic cult, and he has not raped even one woman (to my knowledge).

    VRWC Destruction Machine says:
    “…Glenn Beck is a Constituionalist …..”

Oh, that’s rich. You know as little about the Constitution as Beck does.

You do understand, do you not, that Beck claims that the Constitution is held up by “faith, hope and charity.” If you think that pulling facts out of one’s rectum makes sense, then you’re not just a reactionary destruction machine; you’re a truth destruction machine (which, come to think about it, is pretty much the same thing).
    http://www.sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/2010/07/glenn-beck-thinker-pundit-or-charlatan.html

You also know that Beck comes down on the wrong side of the construction of Park 41 to be a “Constitutionalist,” right? (Of course you don’t.)

Beck has no principles. Only very gullible people, who listen to Beck, think that he has principles (that he doesn’t routine take a dump on to make a point).
