Jon Stewart Blasts Congress: Only Thing You’ve Done Is Declare Pizza Is A Vegetable

Video

Wednesday night, Daily Show host Jon Stewart took Congress for task for focusing not on slashing the budget or job creation or the like but on… declaring pizza a vegetable. Sigh.

After devoting an inordinate amount of time to the topic of hypothetical auto-fellation, Stewart shared that, if the Super Committee fails to come up with cuts by November 23rd, $1.2 trillion will automatically be cut from the Pentagon and Medicare, as well as from other programs. This is called “sequestration,” which sounds a little too much like “secretion” to my liking, but oh well. Once again, no one consulted me on this. Of course, by “automatically,” we mean “not automatically, really, so, actually, there may be no penalty or consequence for accomplishing absolutely nothing yet again.”

Well, that’s not really fair. Congress did gather together to declare pizza a vegetable. Which, oh man, is going to be all sorts of confusing for someone.

The privitization of school lunches has resulted in food quality that barely outdoes the prison system.

Jon Stewart-always a breath of fresh air. In this case however I will be perfectly content if the SC fails. Let the Republicans go back to their districts and explain how they let the Pentagon and Medicare get gutted because they were glued to Grover Norquists’s arse. That sounds like a lot of fun. I thought the tea party was all about making sure the military had all its toys? Well they can kiss all those new weapons good bye along with a nice chunck of the medicare funds.

On the other hand the Democrats should play hardball with these fools because the Bush tax cuts are going to expire and the GOP will do ANYTHING  to prevent that. Obama gave them those cuts on a silver platter-this time ram them down their collective throats. These people will murder their own grandmothers if they thought it could get a tax cut for the 1%.

So Dems its all or nothing time.

You’ll get a lot more hits if you post Samantha Bee’s trashing of the class warfare at OWS. But hey… who wants money when you’ve got an agenda to push…

Uh oh. Congress is in for a doozy. They didn’t sign on to be fodder for a comedy show. I hope they have their zoloft ready.

  • Jonathan Cantor

Surprised mediate didn’t use the daily shows hit piece on OWS tonight. Prob because Jon Stewart is one of those left wing commies right?

So nice to get in here before all of the Rethugs. (Btw, I miss you Tina_Tampon!). This is classic Stewart. Funny yet right on the mark. The GOP is so tied to Big Business that not even our children are safe.

You’ll probably get more hits if you post Samantha Bee mocking the class warfare at Occupy Wall Street. But who wants money when you have an agenda to push.

why is this important? this is infastructure that we seem to not care about..
and this is just one area of one state..
since we have neglected this problem–it is costing much much more…

now think of all of the aging water mains and sewage systems across America…now add roads, electric grids, commuincations, schools, offices and on and on…
yes all are on the brink of collapse..
we could fix them now or fix them later at an exponentially higher price and a substantial inconvenience..

guess which plan the gop wants?

USA USA…we will be the best–if it kills us~

Congress these days really is a comedian’s dream.

If only Dean Martin were still alive, he’d be a party leader in the Senate by now.

Set ‘em up so they can knock ‘em down.

If this Super committee fails to come to an agreement, couldn’t our beloved politicians create a SUPER DUPER Committee? What a bunch of four star clowns. This country is finished, doomed. Enjoy the ride down people !

“We lose 100′s of millions of gallons of water (a year) as a result of leaks,” said Doug Yoder.

Yoder said it will take more money including higher water rates. Because even at the current pace or repairs it will take twenty years and $1,000,000,000 to fix Miami-Dade’s system alone

INFRASTRUCTURE FOLKS—fix it now–or fix it later for a lot more…
save money now–ad 1000′s of jobs or —do nothing and lose lose lose…(even though the cons think they will win some political seats)

  • Rex the Wonder God

It’s even worse than this TDS segment understands: the ruling being impressed on HEW by Congress is NOT actually to ‘make pizza a vegetable’; instead, it’s to make it so that pizza SAUCE counts as a “vegetable” for Congressionally funded subsidy purposes. It’s aimed at pleasing the part of the food industry Creepy Cain worked for.

And it’s not bipartisan: the move is being made by the Republican-controlled House under Speaker Boehner, and opposed by Democratic members of the House committee. So, it’s technically correct to ‘blame Congress’, but misleading, since this is what Republicans want, not Democrats.

  • Anonymous

Aww. Are you not being pandered to this evening? Poor thing! Sucks to be a victim of that evil librul media, doesn’t it?

    What — no corpsemen?

If you’re gonna post your Sean Hannity talking points, you’ve gotta be sure to include the corpsemen thing.

  • Rex the Wonder God

I’m with you, as are tens of millions of progressives, liberals, Democrats and independents. If the supercommittee makes a deal, the people get the shaft; if they fail to make a deal, Congress can overrule the deal imposing arbitrary cuts, so let the Republicans under Boehner take the blame. Or the President can veto. He has sort of committed NOT to veto, on the strict terms of the deal where those arbitary cuts get imposed; but all that has to happen is for the House or the Senate to alter those strict terms and that lets Obama off the hook.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Who is to say here? Mediaite (not, as you put it “mediate”) may yet put it up. Don’t get your shorts in a knot.

tax cuts and saving those who lost their jobs under bush years dumb-a$$…
i admit–he should have just taken 1 trillion and rebuit america…
but unfortunately we have a republican party…

The emergency package includes $550 billion to be spent within two years — more than the government spends annually on programs not including defense and benefit programs such as Medicare and Social Security.
About $318 billion would go to cash-strapped state and local governments facing the prospect of layoffs or tax increases. The money will go toward such things as school repairs and road construction and help pay for rising Medicaid costs.
An additional $102 billion would help victims of the recession with unemployment insurance, health care, food stamps and job training. Jobless aid, available for up to 59 weeks, would be increased by about $25 a week.

Much of the $275 billion in tax cuts would go to middle-income families in the form of $1,000 tax cuts ($500 for individuals). An array of business and other tax cuts would make up the remainder”

now that still does not excuse the fact that we are still IN NEED OF MASSIVE REPAIR–i mean if you want water, electricity and roads? I know you give a hoot about schools…but nevertheless..
stupid talk like this is why we are in the mess we are in and we still have a country rotting on the vine~

    thanks Republi-can’ts

  • Rex the Wonder God

It works best as a mnemonic. Alternatively, you could try an emetic.

  • joe

it was suppose to keep us from falling into a depression..
    did it work?
i don’t know…are we in a depression? still losing jobs?
i know in Florida there are a lot of highway jobs…but since we have a dumbA$$ govie–we lost the high speed rail..
but looks like the package actually helped since we have more jobs in the last 18 months than in bush’s 8 years???
    thanks cons–

  • Rex the Wonder God

    Oop, you missed mnemonics class.

It wasn’t $787 billion; it started out at about $850 billion of which about $300 billion was to be tax cuts and tax-driven incentives. By the time Congress got finished with it, it came to Obama as $787 billion with over even more tax cuts and tax-driven incentives, meaning the truly stimulus portion was cut by Congress by almost $95 billion.

Republicans hate accuracy and nuance; it’s always meme meme meme with wingers.

“Republicans on the House Appropriation Committee said the changes would
“prevent overly burdensome and costly regulations and to provide greater
flexibility for local school districts to improve the nutritional
    quality of meals.”

“They are making sure that two of the biggest problems in the school lunch program, pizza and french fries, are untouched.”, said Nutrition advocate Margo Wootan.

Once again the Republiscum party sells out America’s children to big business.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Ah. No. See there’s a meme there for you to falsely cover the STIM, but no: it was this year’s Jobs bill that aimed at infracstructure. The STIM was more for innovative new non-fossil-fuel energy (and some fossil fuel as well), education, teachers, subsidies for state projects, and SOME infrastructure, but only some; Chris Christie blew off billions of that in closing off two projects that were already well under way, and he not the only one.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Dean wouldn’t be available; he’d be the Speaker – better tan, about the same drinking habits, maybe Dean didn’t golf so much as Boehner.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Hey, you joke, but truth is approaching a joke with this Congress. The Rs have already been floating the Super Duper Committee idea, as in “this time we really REALLY mean it”; but Grover wants the Bush tax cuts in, and Dems know Obama will veto that, so, no go.

it all went down a rat hole demecrats hate acountability

  • Rex the Wonder God

Hey GOPers, got a question for you.

Jon Gruber, the MIT prof who was senior consultant to Governor Romney on Romneycare, and then consultant to President Obama on Obamacare, was quoted in response to Mitt Romney’s recent claim in the GOP Game Show that Romneycare and Obamacare are “substantially different programs”. Gruber said this:”The problem is there is no way to say that, because they’re the same fucking bill. He just can’t have his cake and eat it too; basically, you know, it’s the same bill. He can try to draw distinctions and stuff, but he’s just lying. The only big difference is, he didn’t have to pay for his, because the federal government paid for it; where, at the federal level, we have to pay for it.”

So now I’m confused: Mittens said they are “substantially different programs”, but no one says HOW they are different, and the Gruber, the guy who set the BOTH up, says there work the same.

So, GOPers, can you tell us how Romneycare and Obamacare are “substantially different”?

I live in a town which is bisected by a major waterway.  At the time I’m speaking of we had four bridges.  One morning, we awoke to discover we now only had three.  Two of these structures were truly ancient, one actually being constructed in 1887.  Ironically, the one everyone feared the most is’nt the one that collapsed.  On a similar note, we had a four story, victorian era, building in our downtown collapse.  I imagine this is happening all over the country.  You can ignore a crumbling infrastructure for just so long-then you have to pay.

I have a friend who is a school dietician responsible for a large portion of the state.  The red tape, rules, and regulations boggle the mind.  It’s as you say, low quality junk food is what is served because thats how the rules have been written.  This women is an expert at what she does.  However, in many instances her hands are tied because a political agenda is what really decides what those children are going to get to eat at school.

  • Anonymous

Why? The Republicans will just filibuster it.  But in this case, this bill just needs to die in Congress.

Don’t think they are going to let the Pentagon loose their toys.  The cuts are going to come out of the medical healthcare for military and their families and are going to cut the way they do retirement.  Then when you want people to volunteer you won’t get them because the incentives are gone.  Bring the draft back.

So, let;s get this straight.  The House passes 17 measures to help with jobs.  The Senate doesn’t act on any of them, won’t even let them come up for a vote.  The Senate has passed zero plans to help with jobs, and Obama wants to repeat the same stimulus (by half) that failed so spectacularly already, but the Dems in the Senate won’t even bring his plan up for a vote.

And so we should blame the GOP House for not doing anything on jobs.  That makes sense!

While over in the Super Committee, the GOP has put $350 billion in revenue increases on the table if the Dems will agree to $750 billion in cuts.  Dems won’t even consider it.

Of course, if Mediaite was reporting on the media, they’d be asking why none of that is being reported.

What BS. These are not job bils these are welfare and gifts to right wing corporate masters (like the frozen food lobby). The right wing has ZERO interest in working towards jobs as it might make Obama look better. They care nothing for We The People.

Exactly.  That must be why all the big money from Wall Street is going to Obama and there is a revolving door between the Dem admin jobs and wall street.
