Lawrence O’Donnell Warns O’Reilly To Avoid ‘Weinergate’ By Waving ’04 Sex Scandal Affidavit

video

Lawrence O’Donnell unveiled a new aphorism tonight upon which he declared the nation turned: “if you are a white man, you are going to have your own TV show in America… eventually,” along with your own sex scandal. With “Weinergate” running on all cylinders, O’Donnell used this rule of life against timeslot neighbor Bill O’Reilly to warn that he who has been involved in sex scandal claims should not cast the first stone.

In a very lengthy “Rewrite” segment tonight, O’Donnell called O’Reilly’s discussions of Rep. Anthony Weiner “really, really uncool,” as O’Reilly “provided the eyeroll material in [his] own sex scandal” and, as such, keeping quiet is “just the classy thing to do.” O’Donnell clarified that he himself had not had a sex scandal, and that he didn’t mind if the worst was true about Rep. Weiner, as his “political currency is not stamped with… hypocrisy,” by virtue of being a very liberal Democrat not running on a “family values” platform. He also cushioned the blow he was about to give O’Reilly with a rotating slideshow of politicians that had been caught in sex scandals sharing the screen with him: Eliot Spitzer, Newt Gingrich, Larry Craig, Chris Lee, David Vitter, among others, eventually leading to photos of Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and other notable historical figures.

Then he gave O’Reilly what he called “a lesson in taking the high road” by mentioning without mentioning “the official filings of the 2004 lawsuit against [O'Reilly] for sexual harassment and hostile work environment… you know, the stuff involving the loofah and the falafel.” “I’m putting down this weapon,” O’Donnell told O’Reilly through the screen, though by this point the damage had been done. After this assault, O’Donnell laid down his own law on covering sex scandals again: those who have not been accused of sexual misconduct, “they can take as many shots at Weiner as they want, I don’t care. But you, Bill? C’mon.”

The problem with the operative premise that O’Donnell employs to attack O’Reilly is that he assumes O’Reilly is going after Rep. Weiner from a moral perspective– which is a reasonable assumption to make if one hasn’t watched The O’Reilly Factor since about 2002. Except the assumption didn’t actually manifest itself in reality: O’Reilly’s argument about Rep. Weiner’s behavior has been consistently that he wants the FBI to investigate because he sees hacking as a major national security threat (though skeptics can reasonably see this as a politically expedient strategy for the self-defined traditionalist).

During Tuesday’s program– the first to address the issue– O’Reilly demanded that FBI director Robert Mueller take charge of the investigation, saving his ire for the authorities and mentioning Rep. Weiner only as much as necessary to explain the story. On yesterday’s program, O’Reilly used Wikileaks as an example of why the issue is a problem, taking care to note that he perceived this as a threat to the security of the federal government.

Tonight he went as far as to tell Glenn Beck that he didn’t “really care about that stuff”– meaning the actual photo in question or the substance of the tale– but only that “the Chinese are over there” and anything could happen if a Congressman could be so compromised. None of these arguments correlate to O’Donnell’s thesis that judging the moral behavior of others is a privilege reserved to those who uphold their own standards. O’Reilly didn’t judge Rep. Weiner’s moral behavior– only the professional work of the federal authorities.

Just proves that like most liberal/leftists O’Donnell doesn’t watch Fox News……….but has a strong opinion anyway. And I’m NOT surprised because………………………………

  • felixw

You have to laugh at the continuing obsession with Fox displayed by every host on MSNBC.

That said, O’Reilly’s point is that the FBI should be investigating if someone hacks a Congressman’s computer. He has downplayed the sex angle here — much more so than O’Donnell and the other MSNBC anchors.

  • turk281

    He misses the point entirely.

O’Reilly isn’t paid with tax dollars.

And people vote for Bill-O evry night they tune in. It’s called ratings.

  • Skippy3000

    It’s not news, it’s MSNBC.

  • http://www.nukethefridge.com MartiniShark

Well, Larry is a bit cocksure here because he certainly does not have a sex scandal in his past. The guy looks like tofu getting runny on a windowsill.

  • Liberal Tormentor

LIttle Dickie’s cheerleaders are out in full force. Libs are scared to death!

  • TfT

Who is sicker? LOD for making this story about Bill O (private citizen) or Frances for watching it and writing about it? Like Palin, BOR and FNC live free in their heads…MSNBC is obsessed, and they really are becoming more andmore stupid every day…see this story as a prime example.

  • felixw

Breaking story, Hilary Clinton says FBI will investigate email hacking.

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-china-hackers-20110603,0,4610457.story

But not REP. WEINER’S hacked account. No one in the Obama administration seems to want to talk about THAT story.

You can’t get a straight story about whether the FBI is paying any attention to the hacking of a Congressman’s computer accounts. And it’s increasingly clear that Weiner doesn’t want any investigator looking into what he has on his computer. Draw your own conclusions.

  • Liberal Tormentor

Tft, that’s not fair, Frannie is an Independent. I know this because she said so.

  • glenn113

I saw that coming a mile away! O’Reilly don’t know when to shut up… Props Lawrence http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/crime/oreilly-falafel-suit-turns-five

  • Just my Opinion

What a childesh, ugly little man O’Donnell is.
Of course O’Reilly will just continue to ignore the little shit,
and that just tends to infuritate him more..
The guy is a real Ratings magnet isn’t he?? LMAO
Weiner by his own actions is digging himself deeper!
Severe case of Little Man Syndrome.

Yeah JMO, BillO is that master at ignoring liberals that try to draw him into a fight to generate ratings, since theirs are in the toilet. The American people see this for what it is, liberals trying to change the subject because Little Dickie is sinking like a brick with his gray tidy whities around his ankles.

Correct. Meaning, they didn’t have any morals in the first place.

Man, I love it when libs hang themselves.

  • fenngibbon

Wow. I knew O’Donnell was a partisan hack, but I never realized he was that much of a liberal c********r that he’s taken it upon himself to threaten other people in the media. If I were O’Reilly, I would look into possibly getting a restraining order against O’Donnell — O’Donnell clearly has it in for O’Reilly and he’s had violent psychotic episodes in the past.

So, is Larry attempting to blackmail Bill on the air? I think MSNBC went overboard trying to duplicate a left wing version of the Glenn Beck program and put it in the wrong damn time-slot. And the guy looks like an actual golem to boot.

MSNBC should’ve made a grab for Katie Couric (the proverbial anti-Palin) for their 8PM time-slot. Imagine that chite. Of course they’re not that smart and continue to run Larry and Ed’s shows which belong either much earlier, later or not at all on the supposedly progressive network that “leans forward.” More like the Bizzaro network . . .

Because it’s taking for granted that these are the characteristics of a liberal, this behavior is not only excusable but expected? This is absolutely phenominal, that you tools are openly happy about being such miserable things and think it’s ok to be in positions of power also. Hey, rock on with your bad selves, cool with me.

As for this waste of time article, if it wasn’t for the fourth paragraph where Martel gets smart and states the obvious, I was going to have a whole lot to say. But all thats needed to be said now is the obvious: Because of the accurate observations in the second half of this story, it makes the 1st half, and whole story for that matter, very irrelevant. So why’d ya write it?

This strain of liberal that we have to deal with “lives within the moment.” They really don’t care about much. They SEEM to care about things, but it’s mostly a screed to tear down their opponents (normal people.) For most issues, the issue itself doesn’t mean anything – this is why they never follow their own rules that they push on everyone else.

O’Donnell is one of the most brilliant journalists alive. This segment was not only comedy gold but incredible muckraking. Hooray for Lawrence O’Donnell!!!

That was too awesome, and Lawrence hit the nail SQUARE ON THE HEAD!!!!

I was never a big O’Donnell fan before, but he truly batted it out of the park with this one!

I dont care what anyone says about how Orielly is really concerned about “security”… thats BS. He wears that concern the same way Palin wears patriotism, or the way Breitbart pretends to not be a bigoted liar, or the way Faux pretends to be “fair and bias”.

Its just as disingenuous as calling Common a racist cop-killer, and then saluting a violent bigot like Ted Nugent in the same breath.

And speaking of contradictions… anyone read the joke about the shadey online political provocetuer who once screamed “bring it on”, but then claims to be too scared to go out in the open?

    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/06/leaked_emails_show_tip_to_breitbart_about_weiner_t.php

In any case… what an nice break for Clarence Thomas, that JUST as he was having to reveal what turns out to be his own obvious conflict of interest, this scandal comes along and incriminates the very guy who was investigating him.

I bet Christie was glad that this scandal overshadowed him cutting the purse strings on Missouri as well.

Serendipity? Or a plan coming together?

  • LOGICandREASON

I have never seen a TV anchor so desperate for ratings, he wants O’ Reilly to respond and give him some attention by so doing.

Sorry for the typo, that should be “… the way Faux pretends to be fair and balanced.”

Hey… one more thing, if Breitbart shares Bilbos concern that this should be reported to the FBI, and if he is now starting to have doubts about the reliability of his source, then why isnt he more forthcoming?

I mean, no matter how many people say that “this has nothing to do with Andrew”, it does. To say otherwise is as dishonest as claiming that Fox isnt biased sharply to the right, or MSNBC to the left.

Andrew orchestrated this entire fiasco, and his emails show the same plotting deliberation as in his dishonest ACOPN release method (as that which he describes it in the Moonie rag, the Washington Times)

He has the contact info of the primary person of interest, PatriotUSA76… this person has a very unsavory online history, he KNEW the photos would be out before they came out, he is the only one who saved the image, and even Breitbart ingenue Lee Stranahan offers that he might be the hacker in question.

Furthermore, after rubustly asserting that he “has nothing to hide”, PatriotUSA76 now claims he is afraid to come out in the open because it could “ruin” his life (obviously, a concern he neglected to offer Ms Cordova or Congressman Weiner.)

So why isnt Breitbart (already neck deep in a santorum soaked history of dishonest, politically motivated character assasinations) being more forthcoming about PatriotUSA76 (an obviously dishonest and unstable person with no respect for privacy)

Breitbart NEVER cared about embarrassing innocent people, ruining their lives or doing real damage to the living reputations of his sources, so why make an exception now, especially when HE HIMSELF claims it is soooooo urgent?

“…and that he didn’t mind if the worst was true about Rep. Weiner, as his “political currency is not stamped with… hypocrisy,” by virtue of being a very liberal Democrat not running on a “family values” platform.”

Hey Larry! I think you might want to ask his wife what “currency” his marriage vows have been “stamped” with.
I forget how easily the Democrats separate their private lives from their politics “do as I say, not as I do” mentality. What platform does he run on, if not one of values? “Liar, Liar Pants on Fire” would be a good start…

I’m surprised that Frances didn’t bring up whether threatening another pundit in order to stop him from covering a story is ethical.

  • btimsah

O’reilly is not an elected official, Weiner is. And O’Donnell is obviously just a partisan hack.

  • NonElite

Yeah…O’Donnell is my go-to guy for morality and hypocrisy advice. How about you folks? O’Donnell should be learning from O’Reilly rather that attempting to lecture him on the air. Apparently he has no concept of how ridiculous this makes him look.

  • The Voice of Reason

O’Rielly is not a public official on government and tax payer dime. It is O’Donnell’s job to keep politicians honest when in the face of dishonesty, and possible corruption. That is your job as a journalist, even though he doesn’t seem to know what one his. His job in theory is to keep the politicians honest and straight, not defending them by blackmailing his competitors.

  • The Voice of Reason

Interesting that he is trying to shut someone up from reporting on a story…

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

“Rep. Weiner, as his “political currency is not stamped with… hypocrisy,” by virtue of being a very liberal Democrat not running on a “family values” platform.”

that is such a stupid argument, being repeated over and over again by Weiner excusers. So, he doesn’t support morals? He didn’t support family values when he made wedding vows to his wife? Also just because someone believes in values doesn’t mean they don’t make mistakes. Good to know that Weiner, and Democrats, are excused from lewd behavior because they don’t represent values.

As for O’Reilly, Frances was correct, he was concerned with the hacking. That aside, Weiner is a public official, O’reilly is a private person. Weiner originally claimed a federal offense occured. And O’Reilly’s scandal was exposed, and investigated. So, O’Reilly should shut up, and not go after Weiner? I don’t think so.

Gees, O’Donnell’s head is big! Look at that forehead, it could easily be called a five-head. As Liberals go, O’Donnell ranks right up there with the worst of them. As usual, he takes a chapter out of the Obimbo book of Liberalism and tries to make the messenger the focus of the vitriol, instead of discussing the issue at hand. This tactic has been used so often it has become so transparently, and laughably recognizable that it makes the person using it look like a buffoon. But hey, that’s not going to stop them, is it?!

I asked what happened. Not much of an answer here. I’ll do my best with what little you offer. Taking you at your word, he gave money to someone who made allegations? Ok.

I personaly would tell anyone that brought false accusations to go F themselves. But thats me, i’m not an extremely busy millionaire like O’Rielly. He gave money that wouldn’t put a dent in his wallet so that a potential long running headache would go away. Although it leaves the door open to the imagination and I myself wouldn’t do it that way, never in the hystory of the world has this way of squashing an issue comcluded that the individual is guilty of anything.

O’Rielly has been in this business for 40 years. He has no doubt been around 100s of woman and this is his one incident? When I look at the numbers, I find it just as likely that the accuser was taking advantage of a minor incident, (or completely fabricated) as it is that O’Rielly really did something wrong.

Yeah, it’s just my opinion but you can’t say it’s factually wrong no more then I could say your assumption that he did do something wrong is also factually wrong. So where’s that leave us? You on the wrong side of an O’Donnell defense.

And all without throwing in what others have been saying for days now: 1, O’Rielly has only been harping on the legal aspect of the hacking and 2, even if he was guilty of an all out assault, THIS IS HIS JOB!! To comment on politicians caught in stuff like this. Weiner is a politician, someone in a position of leadership, someone people look up to.

Your wrong to think I would care or defend O’Rielly if he did something wrong and got busted for it. These are just the facts as I see it.

You don’t understand. This is all going on while everyone else is laughing off at O’Donnell and the sheep that get off to his stunts. He is only making himself look like a nutty partisan hack, who doesn’t even know what journalism is. He is making himself look like a child to appeal to the fascist partisans that enjoy this type of unprofessional demeanor and don’t care about facts, or journalism. This is also a stunt, and an attempt to get views in a silly feud.

Anyway the people who actually get exited with this seem to be the most uneducated of the bunch. First off its fanboyish lip service for their spiteful political sidings. Then it is a blatant crime to journalism, and they prove by supporting O’Donnell how much they don’t care about fairness, or integrity in the media. So to educate some Weiner is an elected official. He works on tax payer dime while O’Rielly(not an public official) does not.

As a journalist it is OD’s job to report it and seek the truth when it comes to said elected officials. In this case his is trying to cover it up as a disgusting and unethical attempt to silence the story, while blackmailing his competitor to silence him on reporting the facts as well. This is corrupt, biased, and the opposite of what journalism is supposed to be. If msnbc wants to save any face they would suspend O’Donnell for making a fool out of the network, and showing they don’t care what journalism is, since they employ such a partisan hack void of reason and integrity.

You don’t understand. This is all going on while everyone else is laughing off at O’Donnell and those that get off to his stunts. He is only making himself look like a partisan hack, who doesn’t even know what journalism is. He is making himself look like a child to appeal to the fascist, partisans that enjoy this type of unprofessional demeanor and don’t care about facts, or journalism. This is also a stunt, and an attempt to get views in a silly feud.

The people who actually get off to this seem to be the most uneducated of the bunch. I cannot disagree with Frances Martel that Bill O’Reilly has walked a fine line when it comes to the Rep. Weiner scandal. He did much the same with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Many of you may recall that BillO primarily focused on (or blamed) the Internet for much of Schwarzenegger’s problems, avoiding much commentary about the morally bankrupt former governor. He basically deferred to his guests.

Now he is blaming the FBI for not investigating Weiner and whether he was hacked.

O’Reilly reticence to claim the moral high ground for these two scandals can best be explained by the flack he took for moralizing about Eliot Spitzer in a column he wrote at the time.

Chief among them may have been his old nemesis Keith Olbermann who was chomping at the bit to vilify O’Reilly for not having a leg to stand on.

What some people seem unable to comprehend is that Bill is not a public official. O’Donnell is blackmailing him to cover up a story about one. Whatever Bill may have done years ago is irrelevant. What the clip of Olbermann points to is that these pundits might even be told that they have to go after their competitors and counter parts with spiteful attacks, possibly to attract a fringe audience in which that appeals to. Thing is in this case it is blackmail, and corruption in doing so.

Yea. Or at least equivocate. A politician lying to cover up some type of indiscretion, you rarely see that. But we are not talking about sexual harrassment here, or sexual come on, apparently, but a silly prank by someone. I would guess it is a person that Weiner knows, but we do not know, though it was Weiner’s account. This would have ended but for the I do not know if that is my penis answer. It would seem that Weiner has a photo of his stuff on-line or he could not answer that way. He’s just not sure if the offending photo is his stuff, his stuff enhanced by photoshop, or Ron Jeremy. No telling why he has a photo of his stuff on-line, but there certainly are reasonable explanations for having a PG-13 photo of one’s stuff on your computer device that do not involve perversion.

    .

First. enough with throwing “Fascist” around like you know what you are talking about.
Second, LOD, like Bilge-o, is a commentator on the news, not a journalist.
Shep Smith made that distinction in his response to Bill Keller’s scorn of “fair and balanced.”
There is no network more partisan than F#XEntertainment.
Bilge-o is not a public official, but he is a public figure. He interjects his persona in every show. And public figures cannot avoid public scrutiny.

Nah fascist applies. Or maybe extreme nationalistic identification with a born idealistic mindset. Nation=/= country btw. And this does make it clear that LOD is as far away from a journalist as it gets. His takes it a step further and tries to cover up the news. This is beyond commentation. Also not sure how you can claim that there is no one more partisan than fox on an article about a msnbc host trying to blackmail someone in hopes of covering something up based on the letter next to the politician’s name who is in question, and possibly committed acts of corruption.

This is less public scrutiny, and more attacks on one’s competitor because whoever dictates the “news” in his newsroom told him he had to. He is trying to cover up a politician, by going after his competitor who is reporting on the story. Again based on letter next to the man’s name. In this case Bill is actually leaning to the side of journalist, while LOD is more going into a disgusting mutation of what it has degenerated into. LOD is in need of scrutiny here for his corrupt cover up, and act of blackmail. Though it is partly in hopes of ratings, demonization for the appeal of a fringe following, and down partisan lines. What Bill did has been over for years now. This is happening now. OD wants to cover up what is happening now to report on something from years past that is of entirely different circumstances.

If you think a possible case of corruption in regards to a sitting member of the United States Congress is anything relatable to a sex scandal of a tv personality years ago, then there is no point in even trying.

Either you are psychic, or you are full of sh#t.
You know what goes on inside MSNBC. You find corruption in a picture of a pair of undershorts. You see conspiracy to cover up crimes that have not even been alleged. A “possible” case, based on WHAT?
It is not “blackmail” to say you will read what is on the public record.
The only thing that is obvious is your deep-seated hatred.

“Fascism” is understood to describe the collaboration of the government and large industry.
Examples are the Nazies in Germany with IG Farben and Krupp, and the Fascisti in Italy with FIAT.

Here is the calber of person that Breitbart and his fans turn to as a “reliable source”

    http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/internet/mike-stack-weinergate-co-pilot-219073

    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/06/leaked_emails_show_tip_to_breitbart_about_weiner_t.php

Andy Breitbart and Lee Stranahan now claim they knew nothing about these people, even though Breitbart ran their story on CNN (sorry Tommy Christopher, he really did… I love you lots, but Breitbart REALLY did run their fake story for them.)

What gets me is that they decided to believe them without checking anything out. They decided to make their story for them… and perhaps made themselves accessories to child endangerment in the process.

Knowing “sh#t” doesn’t make someone full of it guy.

I am making an educated observation. When they devote large amounts of time to something so pointless, there is most likely some decision making behind it. Like Olbermann, and the rest of the cast O’Donnell seems to put time aside to whine about his competitors. Newsrooms do have itineraries. You seem okay with unreasonable claims about the agenda of their competitor whom you detest, but really take issue with such a common sense observation?

In regards to Weiner, Possible corruption. Can you not comprehend? We do not know, people are trying to find out, and your hack job hero is trying to shut it up. Is Weiner lying about someone hacking the account of a sitting US Congressmen? Can you comprehend how big that is and how much of a risk? Or is he lying making up such an offence? Then why?

Looks like the media you subscribe to isn’t stimulating critical thought.. more like trying to burry it. And yes threatening someone in the way that O’Donnel did is Blackmail. If Bill doesn’t give into his partisan demands and not cover a story, he will do something undesirable to hurt him. Regardless if you can go out of your way to get the information or not.

Also what hatred? You have to be the biggest hypocrite to accuse that of me. You are the one getting off by O’Donnell sticking it to whom he tells you to dislike, so I am not sure of your grounds for this accusation. Not sure you are either. Making factual points about someone acting utterly unprofessional is not hatred. Regardless of your feelings towards the man. You seem to only want criticism of someone silenced whom definitely by your standards is trying to spread hate for others .

Your thing at the end there is completely. Cases of it are irrelevant to the definitions of them. That can be part of it. According to you the government’s relationship with GE, and many others is fascist. Though you have already shown your love, and denialist affection towards them. Rallying for a group in opposition to another is quite fascist. Not referring to one’s tendencies by what they can be called does not change the fact that they hold them.
