Must-See Late Night Clip: Letterman Takes on Scientology
If you don’t count South Park, The Church of Scientology tends to be an off-limits topic when it comes to pop culture comedy. Perhaps that’s because so many Hollywood celebrities are members of the infamously litigious religion.
But with the HBO documentary Going Clear, based on Lawrence Wright’s explosive book on the church, debuting this past week, David Letterman decided last night it was time for him to get into the mix. After all, he’s only got about six more weeks on the air, what’s the worst that could happen?
So, with all that in mind, Letterman invited a man he called the “head of the Church of Scientology,” Jim Keyes, to tell the Late Show audience how “fun” and innocent the religion really is. And he announced a new promotion, suggested by “one of our most prominent celebrity Scientologists, David Letterman.”
