NPR’s Scott Simon: I Couldn’t Look at Cosby’s Wife When I Asked Him About Rape Allegations
NPR host Scott Simon followed up his Saturday interview with Bill Cosby by appearing Sunday on CNN’s New Day to reflect upon the experience.
Simon had attempted to ask Cosby about the rape allegations that resurfaced in recent weeks, only to receive silence and firm head shakes indicating no comment. A day later, Cosby’s lawyer issued a statement that the comedian will not “dignify” his accusers with any sort of official remarks on the matter.
The NPR host told CNN’s Joe Johns that he was not informed beforehand of any gag orders that would have prevented Cosby from commenting. Instead, he said, the comedian’s PR team seemingly formulated a strategy of silence, possibly thinking it would render the exchange unusable on radio.
“I thought there was a good chance the interview would be canceled,” Simon added.
He also recalled to host Christi Paul how carefully he asked the rape questions in front of Cosby’s wife Camille, who was also present for the conversation. “I did not look at Mrs. Cosby, and I don’t mind saying I might’ve been a little uncomfortable doing that anyway.”
